Dvar Torah Parashas Yisro for the Birthday
The Midrash says בשעה ששמעו בני ישראל אנכי ה’ אלקיך אמרו ברוך שלא עשני גוי, when the Jews heard the Ten Commandments, they said blessed be Hashem for not creating me a goy. The question is why did they not say שעשני ישראל, for creating me a Jew? It says, אנכי ה’ אלקיך אשר הצאתיך מארץ מצרים, I am Hashem your G-d who took you out of Mitzraim. Why does it not say אשר בראתיך, who created you? The gemora in Eruvin says that 2 1/2 years the Beis Shamai argued with the Beis Hilel whether it is easier for a person to have been created or not created. They counted and came to the conclusion that it would have been easier not to be created than created but once created one should scrutinize their actions or substantialize their actions. The Meharsha explains that when counting the number of mitzvos they found that there are 365 negative commandments and 248 positive commandments. So we gain more by not doing than doing and therefore would have been easier not to be born. However, once born when scrutinizing the effect of a negative mitzva and thereby not doing it, becoming 365 negative over 248 positive mitzvos or having the proper machshava, thoughts on a positive mitzva which is considered like actions will give 496 positive mitzvos over 365 negative mitzvos.
So, as it is easier being not born than born, the negative expression is more appropriate and being born is not really a praise. Tosfas says there that for a tzadik it is wonderful that one was born. When we celebrate one’s birthday, we are showing them that we see them as a tzadik.
