MK (Kadima) Yitzchak Ben-Yisrael, a retired IDF major-general stated that Israel will not hesitate to attack Iran should Jerusalem feel there are no other alternatives available.
He explained that as we approach the “point of no return,” Israel will be compelled to use the only remaining option, and Jerusalem is ready for such an eventuality at any moment.
Ben-Yisrael was a part of the planning of the 1981 air force strike on the Iraqi Osiraq reactor. The retired senior officer acknowledged that today’s situation is significantly more complicated, but none-the-less doable.
Speaking to the German Der Spiegel weekly magazine, he confirmed that Israel recently rehearsed the mission, simulating the attack on Iran. This would point to the major air force training event in Greece in the beginning of June, which Pentagon officials viewed as just that, a practice run simulating an aerial attack on the Iranian reactor sites.
The MK’s remarks mimic statements made by Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz a number of weeks ago, remarks that resulted in a backlash of criticism against the former IDF chief of staff.
In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, officials stated that while Israel views the sanctions on Iran as positive step, they do not appear to be compelling Iran to halt its nuclear program. Much more must be done to pressure Tehran into abandoning its nuclear aspirations.
