As the need to write with a physical pen on paper becomes less and less, will people eventually forget how to write? Will it eventually be taken out of school curriculum since digital typing is becoming more and more prevalent? Does not writing for so long affect a person’s penmanship? Or penship if I am to be politically correct?

January 1, 2022 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #2047112Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantYes. At some point, the only thing I was using my writing for were monthly tuition checks written in one batch in September and I found it very tiring. Some of the kids will use online textbook even if a printed version is right on front of them. I tried to make them excited about using dictionaries at some point, but they say googling is faster.
January 1, 2022 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm #2047125rightwriterParticipantGoogling for words is faster than using a dictionary. But that’s a separate topic that’s not writing that’s for looking up information/reading.
I think this can be similar to the cash debate. There is nothing more instant than paying with cash and it is also more private. Same as jotting down a note on physical paper, instant and secure. No need for all the apps and services to know what you wrote down.
January 1, 2022 11:13 pm at 11:13 pm #2047127rightwriterParticipantAlso writing is therapeutic. You mentioned it was tiring for you but there is definitely something different about physical writing than typing on a digital screen.

And nowadays no one really writes checks anymore, they pay with Zelle
January 2, 2022 12:16 am at 12:16 am #2047146rightwriterParticipantGood alternative but writing with a stylus is still digital, there is a different elemental feedback and feel to it. Also writing has been a traditional way of the world since the beginning. We dont approve digital typed Sefer Torah do we? There is just something to it and it would be a shame for this to be a lost art as the use for it declines.
You bring up a good point about Zelle payments, but I think one can argue for writing checks using the same points of paying with cash/writing a physical note, the fact that you dont need technology and you get the task done instantly, I guess the only technology you would need is a pen but thats solved if you carry one! If for whatever reason you have no data, or no battery on the phone or whatever, and dont have cash on you, you can still make a transaction with a check, pretty convenient. The only thing is I suspect banks will get rid of checks sometime in the future.

But I used to write a lot before computerization and it did not bother me. Now, if I make written notes, I then transfer them into computer anyway.
Coffee, our schools did not take Zelle! Maybe they do now.
January 2, 2022 5:58 am at 5:58 am #2047162AviraDeArahParticipantThere are times that I feel I need to become reacclimated to a pen – the vast majority of what I write is electronic; grading papers is one of the only things I do by hand.

Can’t use Google on Shabbat. I miss having a dictionary in the house.“Same as jotting down a note on physical paper, instant and secure.”
Secure until your bag and/or pockets become stuffed with paper notes. Secure until you misplace an important note.January 2, 2022 10:13 am at 10:13 am #2047247rightwriterParticipantYa well on the other hand secure until you get hacked, delete files accidentally, corrupted files that won’t open, or Any other option aside for the fact that everything you write digitally is being stored by hundreds of apps and companies and being sold around.

Indeed. We have a multi-volume encyclopedia that is being used exclusively on shabbos.
January 2, 2022 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm #2047303rightwriterParticipantDictionary is cheap and not an issue to buy. What’s the problem?
January 2, 2022 2:35 pm at 2:35 pm #2047345ParticipantParticipanti write rough drafts on paper but my hand hurts when i use a pen too long.
January 2, 2022 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #2047434rightwriterParticipantwrite with a shorter pen
