Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s First Black President Has Died Aged 95


mandNelson Mandela, South Africa’s iconic former president whose lifelong struggle against apartheid helped break the country’s system of racial discrimination, died Dec. 5, 2013, at the age of 95.

South African President Jacob Zuma announced the anti-apartheid crusader’s death at a somber press conference Thursday.

“Fellow South Africans, Nelson Mandela brought us together, and it is together that we will bid him farewell,” Zuma told his country.

  1. It’s hard to believe there was once a time where a politician managed to get people who were yelling at each to stop and work out an agreement that was in everyone’s interests. That seems so unlike 21st century politicians. He managed to take a country that had been in a perpetual civil war that was threatening to escalate, and totally defuse the situation in a way that left the country’s economy undamaged
