The new facebook, i mean meta will be part of metaverse which will be a virtual reality world. So if you thought people are living in a virtual world now with all the social media and the like, you havent seen nothing yet. Eventually this thing will catch on just like social media, and zuckerberg’s video presentation seems and sounds like a salesman in a SCI-FI movie trying to get you into the virtual world. How will this impact humanity and what is the point of this? Also he mentioned how we wont need physical screens or any physical objects, are these times of Moshiach? Sounds like a pretty spiritual life outside of physical world
He is trying to tank his company on purpose, so he can sell off his stock without getting in trouble from the SEC. That’s the only explanation I can think of

Yes its partially a distraction, but transitioning to the Meta has been part of Zuckerberg’s /FB’s long term strategy for 2-3 years (per Q2 2018 earnings call). I doubt Congress will enact legislation requiring divesting various FB properties nor make serious changes to the section 203 immunity .
Metaverse is already here. I hope to be around in 5 years to see how the CR has evolved. Perhaps when we log in, we will all have tziniusdik avitars sitting around a table in real time responding to the latest misstatements from our esteemed colleagues with the option of “throwing” virtual brickbats when something especially outrageous is said. We might also be able to change the avitars of our colleagues to better reflect how we perceive them in real life.I don’t get it. I’m old enough to remember when announcements like Metaverse were happening on a near-weekly basis. There was VRML, there was Second Life, there was VR Chat. Not one ended up as anything more than a cool looking toy. And none of the Zuckerberg technology is that much more advanced or available than all the others. So what makes Metaverse special?
1. First, Facebook has gotten a bad reputation (e.g., the only thing Democrats and Republicans can agree on, is that Facebook is evil). A change of name is called for.
2. The “metaverse” programs have been around for a long time (e.g. “Second Life” which is about 20 years old). What Facebook wants to do is to upgrade the programming to make it more useful so that is passes for “virtual reality”.
Whatever financial gain Zuckerberg will have from Meta, I am predicting such a (fake) world will be the (virtual) reality despite that fact that people will rant about how evil it is (and it definitely be evil). People will become addicted to it and not be able to tear themselves away from the virtual reality while cursing it at the same time just like they do with Facebook, tick tock, Instagram, etc.
Did anyone say already that meta bivrit means she died? Not sure whether this is a parsha reference or a fitting hesped for sefer panim that started as a collection of Harvard coeds.
Arightwriter, you did say something similar but not exactly the same, virtual reality is only VIRTUAL but in the times of Moshiach it will be a reality that is REAL. It will more real than the physical reality which we are in now.
If the internet is an example of how technology is used by humanity I’m predicting that virtual reality will bring more tumah into the world than ever before. I daven Moshiach should come quickly and we should be exposed to the REAL reality of a world that knows Hashem.

Same for variations of the internet. The ability for individuals to instantaneously access information and communicate and transact had changed the way we live and learn. Gadolhadorah, certainly most things in existence can be used for the good and bad. Certainly the internet is being used for a lot of good. However, it is a major contribution to the breakdown of morals in our society.
I can’t think of anything at the moment, but I’m sure there are things that virtual reality could benefit society, but the potential to destroy whatever is left of morality is much greater than the good it will bring.
Philosopher: Given the accelerated decline of what passes for “reality” these days, I would submit that “virtual reality” may offer substantial benefits compared to the “real thing”.
Gadolhadorah, I hope you were joking. Virtual reality being an illusion will never fill human beings with real happiness and fulfillment. When virtual reality will become a “reality” you can expect the suicide rates to jump even higher than they are already.

good question – can you have more than one FB (MV) “friend” at a time? FB is actually reported in increasing marital problems – people, lo aleinu, connect “virtually” to their former zevugim and things go down hill from there when virtual reality creeps into the real one.
