Israel: Nitzan to Become the Next State Attorney

nitzAnother opponent of Jewish communities in Yehuda and Shomron is being appointed to a senior post, state attorney. Despite objections from the right-wing community, Shai Nitzan, 53, has been tapped to become the next state attorney. The decision was finalized by the committee headed by Justice Minister Tzipi Livni.

Livni feels that Nitzan has a wealth of experience and his expertise will be an asset to the office. Nitzan is currently serving as the deputy attorney general. He will be replacing Moshe Lador.

Other members of the appointment committee included Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein, and Guy Rothkoff, the director-general of the Justice Ministry.

Nitzan failed in two previous attempts to secure the post, but his time he enjoyed strong backing from Attorney General Weinstein.

Deputy Minister Tzipi Hotevely is calling on cabinet ministers not to ratify the appointment. She fears that Nitzan will use this senior position “to compel the government to follow his political philosophy.” She adds that “the correct appointment would be a person who is experienced an capable of combating organized crime and not one who will selectively enforce the law against a certain segment of the population”.
