Former IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Ya’alon caused a stir among family members of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev on Monday when he stated that if the price for their release is too high, then Israel must decide to sacrifice them to protect national interests.
The price is much higher than the potential loss he stated, adding if the military option exists, the IDF should act on it but in all likelihood this is not the case the former chief of staff admitted, since the IDF would have attempted such a move if it were a possibility.
NOTE: As IDF chief of staff, Ya’alon did support the 2004 prisoner exchange which resulted in the return of Elchanan Goldwasser and the bodies of three soldiers in exchange for Israel releasing hundreds of prisoners.
Karnit Goldwasser stated today, Ya’alon does not have the right to make such a statement since he is not their commander and they are not his sons.
