Deri Wants Unity with the Dati Leumi Community

deriShas leader Aryeh Deri is calling for achdus with the dati leumi tzibur. In recent days, Deri met with Eli Yishai, Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar Shlita and Rabbi Tzion Boaron Shlita as he tries to mend broken fences. He is working to rebuild the party, which includes making peace with many people who were once considered members of the Shas family.

During the Eilat Conference Deri spoke of the significant split that exists between the dati leumi and chareidi communities. He highlighted the importance of achieving achdus today. He feels there is a great deal that unites the communities, more than the issues that divide the religious Zionists and chareidim.

Addressing Shas’ failure in the Jerusalem mayoral race, he reminded the audience “Nir Barkat is not an enemy of the Jews and he has been and will continue to be a working partner. We thought Moshe Leon was better suited. We increased our presence in the city council from four to five seats. We have become the coalition’s most courted party.”

When asked about Shas after the era of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L, Deri said “I am not certain regarding our future –where we are headed, towards Israelism or chareidi, but first we must examine what the definition of Israelism is.”

  1. Yitz22, it’s because the terms have lost their meaning. We call people “Amalek” because we’ve already applied the word “Nazi” to half of humankind, including no few Jews, and “haters of Torah” to most of the rest.

  2. Naftush – Thanks for clarification. I get it now. DL Jews should have understood that the term Amalek was not meant to be taken seriously (and that Shas folks were not actually being told to go out and kill DL Jews). I guess this reconciliation proves it as well…

  3. Hmm, isn’t part of trying to reconcile asking Mechila for the wrongs one has done? I have yet to see any of the Shas Rabbonim who used vile, inflammatory language in recent elections take the first step towards apologizing. In fact, at least one of the Shas Rabbonim who used the most offensive language has just been re-confirmed as part of their “Mo’etzes Chachmei HaTorah” – thereby showing that Shas continues to hold these views. There’s also no “Kabala al HaAsid” – commitment to avoid similar occurrences in the future – and I’m sure that as soon as Mr. Deri sees it as expedient, he’ll be right back out there throwing his erstwhile “partners” under the bus. After all, that’s what he’s always done.

Aryeh Deri is interested in what’s good for Aryeh Deri, and that’s about all. He’s a Machiavellian, power-hungry, unethical politician – and anything he says has to be viewed in that light.
