There is a Midrash where a father takes a bumch of reeds tied together and asks his children to break them. They could not. When he unbound them, it became easy to break them. He said as long you are tied together, no one can hurt you. The Jews are liike a rose among the thorns which does not bend to either side in order not to get hurt but will grow straight.
