HaGaon HaRav Avraham HaKohen Kupshitz was niftar on erev Shabbos Parshas Toldos 5774, among the Roshei Yeshiva of Kochav M’Yaakov Tshebin. The niftar was the mora d’asra of the N’vei Tzvi neighborhood of Yerushalayim.
The niftar was born in תרפ”ח to HaGaon HaTzaddik Rav Tzvi Hirsh HaKohen Kupshitz ZT”L, a leading Torah authority in Yerushalayim and a prominent talmid of Saba from Slobodka. Four years before the birth of the niftar, his father arrived in Eretz Yisrael along with a number of talmidim from Slobodka. He was among the six talmidim who began Yeshivas Knesses Yisrael Chevron in Hebron.
After Rav Avraham was married, in תש”י, his father visited the Chazon Ish ZATZAL to asked if his newly married son should learn in Chevron or Mir, with the latter being a very large beis medrash as opposed the former, which was small, only a few talmidim. He was told to learn where there was more support for in such a case, one will have an easier time immersing oneself in limud. Hence, the niftar studied in Chevron.
At some point Rosh Yeshivas Tishbin asked R’ Avraham to begin teaching Torah in Kochav M’Yaakov, where he remained for over forty years. The rav also served as an av beis din on a Yerushalayim Monetary Beis Din.
The levaya was held on erev Shabbos, beginning Yeshivas Tishbin on Chana Street and kvura was in Har HaZeisim.
