Quebec: Westmount Eruv Gets City Council Approval

eruv.jpgWestmount’s council unanimously passed a resolution last month allowing a local Shul to put up an Eruv circling most of the city, The Suburban reports.

Cong. Shaar Hashomayim, whose members asked for the Eruv more than two years ago, are covering all costs related to the project. Chairperson Lynn Eltes says the lack of dissent is a sign the vast majority of Westmount residents are comfortable with the idea.

Mayor Karin Marks said the city is certain the Eruv won’t interfere with tall vehicles or wildlife and, because it’s virtually invisible and being put up on existing city utility poles, Westmount’s non-Jewish residents have nothing to be concerned about.

A congregation employee will be charged with the painstaking task of verifying the line every single week to make sure it’s intact – and a website will alert visitors to its status and a phone hotline is operational to further inform congregation members.

It will surround the city from, roughly, Ste. Catherine St. West to the south, The Boulevard to the north, Claremont to the west and Mountain Ave. to the east (a full map is available on the congregation’s website). Eruvs are already in existence in Côte St. Luc, Hampstead, Dollard des Ormeaux, Ville St. Laurent and Town of Mount Royal.

  1. Just as a point of interest, Westmount is the shpitz wealthty neighborhood in Greater Montreal where the Bronfman’s live.

  2. Also, just to add: There is also an Eruv in the area of the Yeshiva Gedola which also houses the Lakewood Kollel. That section is referred to as the De Vimy area which has many shules and is covered by the Eruv.

  3. And the chasidish neighborhood which is part of the Outremont area also has an eruv. Somehow the chareidi neighborhoods (and probably the most chumradik eruvim) got skipped out of the article.
