Oregon pushing for ethnomathematics in their education system because, well, plain mathematics is racist (??) A harvard study reveals that in the state of louisiana, reparations paid to blacks americans would have reduced covid transmission among them by 31-68%🙄 The black population in the us is 13%, while the NBA is 74% black. Why no cries of systemic racism there? This is ridiculous, democrats have to stop handing them the victim card, number one because systemic racism for the most part is a hoax, number 2 because it doesn’t help them, and number 3 because it ignores what IS actually holding them back. What it DOES do, and is the reason why democrats will keep giving the victim card, is it collects their vote. And don’t bring in the “police brutality” garbage, because while that is debatable, it’s certainly not the reason black kids aren’t doing as well in school.
February 21, 2021 2:21 am at 2:21 am #1950249Yserbius123ParticipantAs much as I disagree with what Democrats and liberals like to call “systematic racism” I also hesitate to speak out against it because a lot of the accusations of “wokeness” and “victimhood” can be used against our fellow Jews who are sometimes a little too quick on the antisemitism trigger.
February 21, 2021 8:15 am at 8:15 am #1950343smerelParticipantThe Democrats and liberals who like to call “systematic racism” are usually also very anti-Semitic and Jews are from the first people they will be accused of taking “white privilege” that has to be eradicated.
I NEVER heard heard any Democrats or liberal use their “wokeness” and “victimhood” in defense of the Frum community. If anything they sneer that the frum community has a “persecution complex” when they are clearly discriminating against it.
February 21, 2021 10:40 am at 10:40 am #1950387jackkParticipantTVAP,
Your post is more of a rant than actual cogent arguments that can be discussed.
” The black population in the us is 13%, while the NBA is 74% black. Why no cries of systemic racism there? ” . Seriously ? Sports ?
What does a Harvard Study on reparations have to do with systemic racism?
Who cares about ethnomathematics in Oregon? I have been trying to understand what ethnomathematics means and what Oregon is trying to implement but I have failed.Systemic Racism is not a hoax. It exists. Not all over , but it does exist.
Fighting systemic racism definitely helps all the people that have been denied equal opportunities due to it.It doesn’t ignore any other problems that are holding minorities back. It is a piece of the puzzle.
The prevarication that democrats believe in equalizing the playing field just to garner votes is similar to the canard that that they are for immigrant rights just to garner votes.
(Trump gave tax cuts so that they rich will vote for him. Do you believe that ?)Police brutality has nothing to do with any of the educational issues in schools. But police brutality is an issue that needs to be resolved because it effects all citizens – whites too.
The last president loved police brutality. “Hit their heads pushing them into the police car.” People are protesting and he wants to walk to a church for photo op – blast their heads off.February 21, 2021 11:22 am at 11:22 am #1950406smerelParticipantjackk,
Your post is also more of a rant than actual cogent arguments that can be discussed.
but to address two
Systemic Racism is not a hoax. It exists.
There is affirmative action and other systems in place to make sure underprivileged white people don’t get ahead
police brutality is an issue that needs to be resolved because it effects all citizens – whites too.
And crime is an even bigger issue that needs to be resolved because it effects all citizens – BLACKS too. How many thousands of (mostly black) people did the liberals send to their deaths with the “police reform” after the BLM riots? How many thousands more will die for the sake of those “reforms” until a Republican takes over? (Hint: In NYC alone the murder rate is up fifty percent compared to a year ago. Over ninety percent of those murdered are black or Hispanic)
February 21, 2021 11:26 am at 11:26 am #1950411🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantBefore this police brutality battle cry became a “thing”, there was outrage over all the killings of blacks by cops. The stats showed, if i remember correctly that 18 blacks were killed by cops. When those stats didn’t support the cause, they switched it to police brutality, and by then the excitement of getting free stuff from target took on a life of its own. But it was founded on lies.
February 21, 2021 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm #1950464torahvaluesoverpartyParticipantJack, what are you trying to say? Yes, my post is a “rant” and I’m ranting that the narrative that america is systemically racist is garbage, and democrats pandering to the blacks, giving the victim card is actually a great disservice to them, but they do it only to collect the black vote. You say, systemic racism exists some places, and denies some an equal opportunity. Show me. Name the racist law. And yes, I am bringing sports into it, because if it was the other way around, with whites proportionally dominating sports, we would undoubtedly hear the cry of “systemic racism”. Not that I actually think whites are discrimated against in this subject, I do think there is a non-racist way to explain why POC dominate the NBA. And we are now seeing that in any subject PoC don’t do as well, the reason has to systemic racism. And policy being implemented to “fix the racist result.” Not to “equal the playing field”.
YserFebruary 21, 2021 9:49 pm at 9:49 pm #1950605charliehallParticipant“the narrative that america is systemically racist is garbage”
Not garbage at all. Fact.
I am old enough to have gone to a segregrated all white elementary school. The all-black school was an underfunded dump. My parents also went to all white schools. Black schools paid their teachers more poorly everywhere other than Washington DC (which, no surprise, had some great all black schools during the segregation era), and the very first victory of the modern civil rights movement was a lawsuit that forced Norfolk VA to pay teachers at its white and black schools the same. Further lawsuits required facilities in black schools to be improved and the racists resented paying the taxes. Then when integration came, Virginia closed public schools in four districts to avoid integration.
Many institutions of higher education would not accept black students, or accepted very few, and to this day they give “legacy preference” to descendants of alumni from those racist years.
This is racism. This is systemic. And that legacy preference stuff negatively affects Jews yet people who claim to be Jews defend it.
And I didn’t even mention slavery.
February 21, 2021 10:32 pm at 10:32 pm #1950639torahvaluesoverpartyParticipantCharlie, if the thread was titled “america was always a fair country for all Americans” , your comments would be relevant. But the discussion is clearly about TODAY’S america, no one’s arguing america(or any country) was always fair for all humans, but in today’s america, supposed “systemic racism” is NOT the roadblock for POC. Answer this specific question, is america more racist today than 60 years ago? Obviously not. But yet the percentage of POC being raised by single mothers have about tripled, from 25%, to about 75%. Look forward to your response, hopefully will be a little more relevant.
February 22, 2021 10:24 am at 10:24 am #1950827jackkParticipantSmerel,
“(Hint: In NYC alone the murder rate is up fifty percent compared to a year ago. Over ninety percent of those murdered are black or Hispanic)”That is false. The murder rate in NYC is way down by 35%
February 22, 2021 10:24 am at 10:24 am #1950826jackkParticipantSmerel, TVAP,
There are more than 1 issue in America that need to be resolved. They are not mutually exclusive.
Crime and Police brutality.
Racism against POC and racism against whites because of over compensating for POC.
Racism being one roadblock for POC. There are other issues that are also roadblocks for POC.The ones that are affected by a particular issue are usually the most vocal or start riots in trying to get it resolved. (Like BLM for police killing black people and Republicans for trump losing an Election.)
It’s hard for me to believe that anyone does not realize that there are a lot of white racists in this country. This is true especially in the south which didn’t come out of legal and system racism until the 60’s. So what if it is less than 60 years ago? That doesn’t make it a non-issue. The are a significant number that are no less racist than their grandparents.
The white supremacist groups and conspiracy theories have a lot of support.“Yet the percentage of POC being raised by single mothers have about tripled, from 25%, to about 75%”. Where did you get that statistic from?
February 22, 2021 10:44 am at 10:44 am #1950834Amil ZolaParticipantI just don’t get the rant. You don’t live in Oregon, and I would guess that your children and the children of your community don’t go to public school. BTW the Oregon DOE suggests teachers take this training, it’s not required, nor has the DOE adopted ethnomathematics. (I don’t even think it goes toward CE credit.)
Yea your rant fascinates me. As an Oregonian, meh. It’s not likely that the DOE will adopt ethnomathematics in the near or distant future. I spent a few years working for the DOE, and I’m guessing due to prior experience this is a new national trend in pedagogy. I’m also guessing that the DOE has gotten some grant money to fund these trainings, that’s their usual SOP.

“That is false. The murder rate in NYC is way down by 35%”
NYMag 12/29/20 by Matt Steib:
“New York City recorded 447 homicides for the year as of Tuesday, a 41 percent increase over 2019 and the largest tally since 2011, according to the NYPD. Shootings have risen by 95 percent since last year, with this year’s 1,480 incidents coming close to a 14-year high.”
WSJ 1/7/21 by Ben Chapman:
“The number of murders in the city rose to 462 last year, up nearly 45% from 319 in 2019, according to the NYPD. The increase accompanied a steep rise in gun violence more intense than any seen in the previous 20 years, according to police statistics. The city recorded 1,531 shootings in 2020, 97% more than the 777 in 2019. Data showed the number of shooting victims in the city more than doubled to 1,868 in 2020 from 923 in 2019.”
““Yet the percentage of POC being raised by single mothers have about tripled, from 25%, to about 75%”. Where did you get that statistic from?”
Wikipedia; “African-American family structure”
In the Harlem neighborhood of New York City in 1925, 85 percent of kin-related black households had two parents… in his 1965… however, the out-of-wedlock birthrate had increased to 25% among the black population… in 1991, 68% of black children were born outside of marriage. U.S. Census data from 2010 reveal that more African-American families consisted of single mothers than married households with both parents. In 2011, it was reported that 72% of black babies were born to unmarried mothers. As of 2015, at 77.3 percent, black Americans have the highest rate of non-marital births among native Americans.”“The are a significant number that are no less racist than their grandparents”
Any chance you have a source for this claim?February 22, 2021 3:29 pm at 3:29 pm #1950984torahvaluesoverpartyParticipantAmil zola, the point of my rant is simple. Because this is not just in Oregon, that was just one example I gave. Check out the new history curriculum in (I believe) the state of Minnesota. It’s a trend. A trend of giving POC the victim card, instead of working on the real issues they face. And in the process of doing so, they teach young kids, and collage kids, to frankly, hate America.
Jackk, I’m not saying there aren’t racists in this country, there certainly are. But they are not what’s holding POC back. Racists existing in this country doesn’t make it “systemically racist” . If politicians were to raise awareness to the staggering amount of children being raised by single mothers, and work to bring that number down, they would have done more good for POC than they’ve ever done.February 22, 2021 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm #1951020Amil ZolaParticipantPOC have been victims, they continue to be victims for a variety of reasons which I won’t argue here. Again your kids aren’t going to public school. And you still can do what other towns have done. Elect nothing but Frum Jews to your school board.
February 22, 2021 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #1951030jackkParticipantbk613.
We are in the year 2021.
The year to date Murder rate in 2020 was 43 and this year it is 38.
Check the NYPD website.
I don’t see in your data the percentage of single mother goings from 25% to 75%.
Non marital births does not mean a single mother is raising the baby. It means the parents are not married.Great question. How do we quantify racism? Maybe we can add a question on the census , are you racist?
February 22, 2021 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm #1951031jackkParticipantTVAP,
I agree with you 100% that kids being raised by single parents is not a healthy environment.
Instead of complaining about the Democrat’s Social system which allows the kids to be fed, clothed and housed , please tell us the Republican solution?
February 22, 2021 8:05 pm at 8:05 pm #1951100bk613Participant“We are in the year 2021.”
I think its fair to assume that the original poster was referring to 2020 given that we are only 7 weeks in to 2021. Its great that the city is on track to have fewer murders this year. Hopefully it can stay like that.“Non marital births does not mean a single mother is raising the baby. It means the parents are not married”
Ann E Casey Foundation, says 64% of African American kids are living in single parent homes in 2019.“How do we quantify racism?”
I don’t know, your the one who said a significant number of southerners are just as racist as their grandparents so how do you quantify racism and how did you come to this conclusion?February 22, 2021 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm #1951105charliehallParticipant“The murder rate in NYC is way down by 35%”
As of last week it is down by 12%.
It never ceases to amaze me how people post such easily debunked falsehoods, not bothering to take the one minute it takes to check.
February 22, 2021 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #1951125HealthParticipantBk613 -“The city recorded 1,531 shootings in 2020, 97% more than the 777 in 2019.
New York City recorded 447 homicides for the year as of Tuesday”Now why is that?
There should have been much more deaths.
The reason is much more Trauma Centers, that primarily are in the Inner Cities!February 22, 2021 11:43 pm at 11:43 pm #1951140torahvaluesoverpartyParticipantJackk, I was never complaining about the “democrats social system which allows the kids to be fed, clothed and housed” (which btw is NOT exclusive to the “democrats social system”, you seem to imply that us bigoted republicans would like to deny basic human services to those in need, don’t know where you got that disgusting assumption from) if you’ve been paying attention to what I’ve written earlier in the thread, it’s pretty clear what I have a problem with. It’s the democrats blaming the lack of equal success by POC on some sort of systemic racism. I think we both agree that a kid being raised by a single parent is less likely to succeed, that’s common sense. It’s also a fact that that number has gone through the roof the last few decades. In a “Republican system”, we would raise awareness to this specific problem, (kids being raised by a single mother) and focus on bringing the percentage down.
Ami zola, you seem to be a bit out of touch with our discussion. We are discussing politics, policy, not in our yeshiva velt, but in the American system… -
