Conservative talk show radio host and Republican party icon Rush Limbaugh has died. He was 70 years old.
His wife Kathryn announced his passing on his radio show Wednesday, saying Limbaugh died earlier this morning.
“Rush will forever be the greatest of all time,” she said.
Limbaugh had been battling advanced lung cancer since February.
Back in October, Limbaugh provided this somber update on his show: “You know, I wake up every day and thank God that I did. I go to bed every night praying I’m gonna wake up. I don’t know how many of you do that, those of you who are not sick, those of you who are not facing something like I and countless other millions are.”
Former President Donald Trump awarded Limbaugh the Medal of Freedom during his most recent State of the Union address
This appearance only a few days after his he revealed his diagnosis on his show.
“I can’t help but feel that I’m letting everybody down with this, but the upshot is that I have been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer,” Limbaugh said in February.
“The Rush Limbaugh Show” first aired in 1988.

Is this the best Yeshivaworld could do for someone who was not only a great and influential American, but a great friend of the Jewish people and Jewish values? To post “from lung cancer” with a picture of him lighting up a cigar?

I can’t say I was his greatest chusid, but I did tune into his show periodically. His style was a bit abrasive, but I agreed with many of his positions. Hearing a conservative voice was refreshing.
Now for the other angle. The media was not silent about the dangers of smoking. The scientific world was regularly updating the information base with more and more data on the serious health risks. And they spoke about lung cancer many decades ago as one of these effects. I recall hearing several times in which Rush addressed the subject, and dismissed the voluminous research because it went against his own addiction. And precisely this took his life.
I point the parallel because the same discussion has been held with others in our own community who utter such untruths and nonsense as “Reb Moshe was mattir smoking”, and similar foolishness. The psak halacha against smoking was made clear by so many of the poskim of our generation as well as a few previous ones. There are seforim dedicated tot he subject. Based on the current data, the halacha about the issur of smoking categorizes it as a Lo Saaseh – Min Hatorah. It’s not a chumrah, and addiction is not a heter to continue violating such an issur.
I know I have dragged the commentary into the halacha smoking topic, and others may wish to limit it to Rush Limbaugh. But Rush defended his “right” to smoke, and it killed him. Should we recognize that our defensiveness, in the face of consensus of poskim, is similarly wrong, and perhaps deadly?

just randomly scrolled thru the video on my filtered computer and boom there is rush giving his rebbetzin a neshika right there for every chatzi ben torah whose only news site his filter lets him go on is yeshiva world and tls , and boom hes giving his rebbeitzin a kush, not to mention the organization you posted last night on the live feed had woman singing and dancing my chavrusa mentioned to me this morning that his wife commented that to him as well and my other friend told me he saw it also when randomly skimming thru that organzation dinner you guys need to clean up your act and do it fast!! gosh what is wrong with all of you YWN YOU HAVE A BIG ACHRAYUS AND YOUR NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT
Agreed. He deserves a better pic than this.
He not only smoked cigars, but he also sold cigars under his Limbaugh brand. It was irresponsible of him because many of his followers began smoking his cigars with all its health consequences. Showing the photo of him smoking will hopefully be a lesson about the dangers of tobbaco. He was an Oheiv Yisroel that promoted traditional values & he deserves credit for that. He sadly followed Trump over the cliff like many of us did.
I once heard that Rabbi Nate Segal was a close friend of Rush, took him to Israel and introduced him to the frum world. Rush was a great friend of Israel and the orthodox jews. A true tzadik. He will be missed. A very sad day!
Baronzev, you express a noble sensitivity, but perhaps a great influencer such as he, would be happy if someone heeds his last message and stops smoking.
