BARUCH DAYAN HaEmes: HaGaon HaRav Dovid Soloveitchik, Z’TL, Thousands Attend Levaya [VIDEOS & PHOTOS]

Brisker Rosh Yeshivah, z'tl (Shuki Lehrer)

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Hagaon HaRav Meshulam Dovid Halevi Soloveitchik ZATZAL, Rosh Yeshivas Brisk. He was 99.

Thousands of people joined the levaya at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning, which began from the niftar’s home on 17 Eli HaCohen Street and passed by the nearby Yeshivas Brisk on the way to Har Hamenuchos, where he will be buried next to his father, z’tl.

It was announced at the beginning of the levaya that according to the wishes of the niftar, z’tl, his oldest son, HaRav Yitzchak Zeev, the son-in-law of HaGaon HaRav Baruch Dov Povarsky, will take his position as Rosh Yeshivas Brisk.

The sons of the niftar, HaRav Yitzchak Zeev and HaRav Asher, and his son-law Rav Kaplan are being maspid their father. Their hespedim will be followed by those of the niftar’s brother-in-law, HaGaon HaRav Moshe Shternbuch, Av Beis Din of the Eida HaChareidis and his mechutan, HaGaon HaRav Povarsky, Rosh Yeshivah Ponevezh.

The paroches was removed from the heichel of Yeshivas Brisk.

The Rosh Yeshivah contracted the coronavirus in October and after initially being treated at home, was hospitalized at Hadassah Ein Kerem after his condition worsened and was subsequently sedated and ventilated.

He was released to his home in early December, where a private ICU unit had been set up. His condition continued to deteriorate, until his Petira early Sunday morning.

The Niftar is the fifth of twelve children and the third son born to the Brisker Rov, Hagaon HaRav Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik and his Rebbitzen Alte Hindl. The exact date of his birth is unknown, but it is known that his older brother Reb Chaim was born in January 1920 and his younger brother Reb Refoel Yehoshua was born in spring 1924.

The Rosh Yeshiva emigrated to Mandatory Palestine with his father during World War II, and they settled in Yerushalayim. He married the daughter of HaRav Asher Sternbuch of London. He is the brother-in-law of Hagaaon HaRav Sternbuch, the Posek from Yerushalayim.

In the late 1970s, he opened his yeshiva in the Gush Shemonim section of the Givat Moshe neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Below is the last-known video of the Rosh Yeshivah, z’tl. After the Rav was released from the hospital on Erev Shabbos Chanukah, two talmidim visited and sang for the Rosh Yeshivah, z’tl.

Below is a video of the Rosh Yeshivah, z’tl, on his daily walk.

  1. The Rav passed away from Covid and just look at the photos of the levaya.

WHAT DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND?? How many more have to die, leaving us without any Gedolim/Admorim?

  2. Not a single word about how this illegal gathering of thousands will further spread corona and cause more levayot. Shame on you YWN!

  3. What is going on?!
    רוצחים
How many of these people will not fast because they are Machmir on Pikuach Nefesh?

    אֵיכָה הָיְתָה לְזוֹנָה קִרְיָה נֶאֱמָנָה מְלֵאֲתִי מִשְׁפָּט צֶדֶק יָלִין בָּהּ וְעַתָּה מְרַצְּחִים

  4. This insanity is what passes these days for kovod hames??? No masks, no distancing, pushing and shoving like a heard of cattle at a shlachthois?? The chareidi population already is dying at more than twice the rate for the rest of the population. At some point, you just step back and decide not to waste vaccines and scarce resources on them and just let them destroy themselves.

  5. YIDDEN WILL DIE BECAUSE OF THIS HUGE FUNERAL

YWN – HOW DARE YOU POST THIS ARTICLE LIKE IT IS NORMAL FOR THIS CROWD TO LITERALLY MURDER OTHER JEWS ???????????

  6. Wow. So many anti-Jews commenting here.

People have the nerve to call their fellow Jews murderers because they are attending a funeral for this giant of Torah?

LiHavdil elef havdalos, over the summer, plenty of gentiles rioted and gather together for concerts and other vanities, and we didn’t hear of any increase in Covid cases there.

These attendees probably all had the virus already so are neither at risk, themselves, nor a risk to anyone else. As well, the Zionists are very proud of how they’ve vaccinated so many of their populace, Hashem yishmor.

Baruch Hashem, that this tzaddik had a turn-out befitting his greatness in Torah. May he be a meilitz yosher for all of Klal Yisrael and may we all merit greeting Mashiach immediately BB”A.

  7. 3 gedolim died this weekend of covid. I want to assume that they didn’t put themselves in a matziv of sakkana. But either they did or someone that they let near them did. And that’s the problem here. I don’t care about these people at the levaya. I care about the people they kill. #superspreader

  8. “These attendees probably all had the virus already so are neither at risk, themselves, nor a risk to anyone else…”
The sheer stupidity of some of these posts is breathtaking. Not only is the statement that “ALL” these idiots crowded together w/o masks “had the virus” untrue, but there is increasing evidence of reinfection with the new strains or becoming a carrier for the virus and infecting others when they return home. Sad to think how many of these photos (or their family members) could themselves become the next statistics, but apparently such collateral damage is OK.

  9. 1) Shekulah misas tzaddikim k’sreifas beis Elokeinu

    2) I originally was absolutely horrified by this apparent #superspreader — to the extent that I was even about to write that I agree with @Gadolhadorah for once (which is saying something)… until I saw the anti-Semitic way @Gadolhadorah chose to end its post; this reaffirmed to me that @Gadolhadorah is nothing but a Jew-hating sicko.

    3) I realized that it is not even slightly far-fetched to assume that everyone present had already had COVID and were therefore endangering no one.

  10. Bunch of meshugoyim commenting here, the Briskers, and other gedolim didn’t hold of the stupid masks. That’s why you don’t see them wearing them, it’s not even proven that they work at all, and if you believe they work than keep your mouth shut and wear it yourself, stop bugging everyone over this stupidity, it’s mind boggling how people can get crazy over a cold, where were you guys when the flu was around I didn’t see you wearing masks then, every time you walked into a hospital you weren’t wearing masks in fear of someone getting killed. If you don’t like germs stay home, don’t make everyone else nuts because you’re a shoteh

  11. @hu bacha: You have a severe mental illness; I, however, am not a mental health professional, so I can’t diagnose you. I beg you: see a competent mental health professional immediately.

  12. “Yasher” the majority of Jews agree to me as you can see clearly on the pictures, and actually even non Jews agree to this, so I’m not sure who is mental, if everyone is considered mental, then I would recommend getting yourself Checked out. Just because most people don’t agree to your weird ideas doesnt make them mental, it makes you mental because you aren’t normal. Therefore please go to your local professional doctor and do us all a favour and get yourself checked out.

  13. @yashar, Whether Hu Bacha has a problem, it doesnt matter. If a person still thinks that its because of him and?or covid restrictions that save a person from the virus, it is he who has a problem. You take the doctors informationand go to a posek and do what he tells you. Your doctor isnt a posek and niether are the gvt. officials.

  14. @hu bacha: I’ll get myself checked into the hospital for an evaluation when I become sure I won’t be stealing a bed from your spouse/parent/child/friend/self in the COVID ICU.

@Mottel: 100% correct! — If you would not have a life and wish to review my previous posts on YWN, you would see that your mussar is unfounded. Since I’m assuming you do have a life, I’ll just explain that I agree with you completely. I still think @hu bacha is mentally ill, however, for the phraseology used. See my first post above, as well, for kicks.

  15. “Yasher” you don’t need a bed to go get mental help. Unless they accept you as a mental person, and you are being accepted at the crazy house. So the fact that you say that you would need a bed is directly implying there you would be accepted as a crazy individual. Thanks for making my point.

  16. “Mottel” to make it clear, I don’t have a problem, I’m just voicing the opinions of the people that are fed up with this garbage, if people have a problem with germs, stay home. The reality is there’s alot of sicknesses out there but we learn to live with it, not impose everyone’s meshugas in ppl. “Yasher” obviously has problems and is a control freak. It’s good this guy isn’t the Governor he would make cuomo look like an Angel

  17. @hu bacha:

You’re correct, obviously; I know that I wouldn’t need a bed. I was just trying to make what I guess was a stupid joke in order to bring out my point.
Now, COVID is not like other sicknesses; just ask Misaskim, Hatzolah, etc. if the situation is “regular.” Your original post was extremely insensitive to the Yidden who have been plunged into mourning due to COVID-related loss, to Yidden who currently are struggling with COVID, to Yidden who are at high risk of experiencing complications with COVID… and to the primacy of life in general. My issue with your original post was with your chosen phraseology which displayed that insensitivity.
Regarding your accusation that I am a control freak: Could you explain what your evidence is? What controlling tendencies did I display? I have not commented on whether or not businesses should be open, shuls should be closed, etc.; see my original post (just above your original post). All I meant is that in the unlikely event that a sizable number of attendees had never been sick with COVID or received two doses of the vaccine, the level of crowding would be despicable. A little social distancing in this time period would not have displayed a lack of kavod hameis to Moreinu HaRosh Yeshiva R’ Dovid, ztk”l… nor would it have been “controlling.”
I was very insulted that you compared me to Dictator Cuomo. But it serves me right for being insulting in my first post to you.
    I apologize.

  18. @hu bacha:

By the way, aargghh, I just realized that it seems from your misspelling of my screen name that you apparently think my screen name is “Yasher,” as in “Yasher Koach.” It’s supposed to be “Yashar” (hence the second “a” as opposed to an “e”), as in “Yashar” or “Straight,” like “straight-talk.” Maybe you didn’t htink that, but your misspelling implied as such.

    🙂

What on earth is the explanation for your screen name, by the way, if I may be so bold as to inquire?

  19. @ hu bacha let me rephrase that. im no saying that you has problems,im saying that when whoever posted that someoe here has a problem, it doesnt matter. People can agrre to disagree. i dont agree with some posts here, so im just voicing my opinion. i apologize if i insulted anyone.

  20. @ hu bacha let me rephrase that. im not saying that you or anyone else has problems,im saying that whoever posted that someone here has a problem, it doesnt matter. (fixing the grammar on my previous post so it looks somewhat normal)
