A Siena College poll of registered voters released Monday found respondents evenly divided, 44-44 percent, on whether the state is headed on the right track or in the wrong direction.

People who live in upstate New York tended to be more pessimistic. The poll found that 57 percent of upstate residents said the state is headed in the wrong direction.

In contrast, 51 percent of the voters in New York City and the downstate suburbs felt that the state was headed on the right track.

The telephone poll of 822 registered voters was conducted Oct. 14-16. It has a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
