Minister Katz: New Interchange Will be Named in Memory of Maran ZT”L

Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz remains firm in his decision to name a new Jerusalem interchange, Route 16, in memory of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L.

Shortly after the gadol hador’s petira a petition began which expressed opposition to perpetuating Rav Ovadia’s name with the roadway, stating “One who perpetuates the memory of Rav Ovadia with the interchange perpetuates racism, hatred and preaching against anyone who thinks differently.”

In light of the circulating petition, the minister on Tuesday, 18 Cheshvan 5774 decided to clarify his position, which remains unchanged. Katz added “Rav Ovadia was a large figure for Israel and especially for Yerushalayim. Am Yisrael had its spiritual leaders throughout the generations, those who were engulfed in limud Torah and piskei Halacha which connected them to our roots. His entire being and character are unique. Rav Ovadia was among the geonim – a Torah giant and spiritual leader to a large community, a community that studies Torah alongside many who are once again finding their place amid the tradition of their parents, their Jewish roots and traditions. Hence, the enormous influence and leadership have prompted my decision to commemorate the road and I will not change [this decision].”
