Perhaps in response to the letter released by Rabbi Tzvi Tau Shlita, Kiryat Arba Chief Rabbi Dov Lior Shlita feels there is no law that necessarily compels us to vote for frum candidates exclusively.

The rav specifies both Yerushalayim and Beit Shemesh, where the favored candidate for the dati leumi community is competing against the candidate favored by the chareidim, with the latter being shomer Shabbos while the former are not.

The rav states:

“ככלל יש להעדיף מועמד ירא ה’ הנשמע להדרכת תורתנו בכל אתר ואתר. אולם הדברים צריכים שיקול ובירור בכל מקום כלפי ענינו, בירושלים, בבית שמש ובכל אתר ואתר, ובהם הניסיון והכישורים של המועמד, מגמת האישים הפוליטיים והמפלגות העומדים מאחוריו וטובת העיר וכלל תושביה.”

Perhaps the rav in his words is referring to the deal-making involving Jerusalem mayoral candidate Moshe Leon and Shas leader Aryeh Deri.
