Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu‏‏ and other Israeli senior political figures condemned the violent raid of the US Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

During a press conference with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who is currently visiting Israel following his visit to Sudan, where he presided over Khartoum’s signing of the Abraham accords, Netanyahu referred to what happened in Washington.

“For generations, American democracy has inspired millions around the world and in Israel,” the prime minister said.

“American democracy has always inspired me. Lawlessness and violence are the opposite of the values we know Americans and Israelis cherish. The rampage of the capital yesterday was a disgraceful act and it must be vigorously condemned. I have no doubt that American democracy will prevail. It always has.”

Mnuchin also condemned the incident during the press conference. “The violence that occurred last night at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. was completely unacceptable,” he said. “These actions are unacceptable and must stop.”

Defense Minister Benny Gantz stated that the images from Washington “hurt the hearts of everyone who believes in democracy. I never believed I would see such scenes in the most powerful democracy in the world.”

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai, who recently formed The Israelis party, joining the run for the next elections, said that he is lighting up the Tel Aviv municipality with the colors of the US flag on Thursday evening in order to “encourage and support the “land of the free and home of the brave.”
