When Rabbi Amnon Yitzchak announced he was running in the last Knesset elections he faced much opposition, most of all from Shas and Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L. Yitzchak was ousted in the Shas community for brazenly deciding to ignore the words of Maran and run his own list.
Rav Yitzchak insisted he was directed by HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita, not his own kovod, but he never really gained momentum – spending much of the election process defending his decision. There was much back and forth as Rav Amnon insisted Ashkenazi gedolim urged him to run a separate list, but this did nothing for him with Maran and Shas, where he became persona non grata.
Those who backed the rav launched a website to express their support for his Knesset list. This was separate from the rav’s Shofar website.
YWN-ISRAEL recently reported that the supporters of Rav Amnon, the very same people who created the website, used that forum to announce plans to charter a bus and travel to Maran’s kever to ask mechila.
Rav Amnon has announced that he is opposed to this initiative, calling that website “the website of traitors.”
Those who supported Rav Amnon during the election used their website to write “We never intended to hurt Maran, we just thought differently (as we do today). “Today Maran is in the Olam HaEmmes and now he knows what was in our hearts back then.
“However, during his lifetime Maran said there was no mechila for one voting for another politically party, not in this world or Olam Haba. We are organizing a bus to Maran’s kever to ask mechila, to explain to him and to ask him to be mispallel for us”.

Is this a soap opera?
It looks like theyeshivaworld.com doesn’t like Rav Amnon Yitzchak Shlit”a according to what I’ve seen lately only negative articles on him.
I don’t know what’s wrong with what Rav Amnon Shlit”a said, he doesn’t think that asking mechilla was required in this situation.
It is clear that Rav Ovadia Ztz”l was a Gadol Hador, nothing to doubt about that, and no one ever denied it.
He just had this blunt way of expressing and doing things which most of the other Gedolei Hador didn’t hold of. Besides, whoever has a drop of knowledge knows that he didn’t always say what people (mis)quoted in his name. Even when he did there was some brainwashing done before…
In my view, I think Rav Amnon Yitzchak will still emerge with great strength. He is a true leader, maybe a little sharp is enough smart and giving to make up for that.
