Trenton police said “errors in paperwork” caused a body to be left in a morgue for seven years after police knew who it was.
Terisenne Hearren’s body was found in a burned-out building in 1999. Police identified the 37-year-old and called her family in 2001.
Police told the family, which was scattered around the country and did not have much money, that she could be buried for free.
But that never happened. Instead, the body remained in the Mercer County morgue.
Police told The Times of Trenton they did not fill out the proper forms.
This the second time this year Trenton police have admitted to a morgue mixup.
In the other case, they apologized to a family for not notifying them that their daughter’s body had been identified two years earlier.
