NY Casino Foes Smash Slot Machine Outside Capitol

Obit GrevembergOpponents of a Nov. 5 referendum to expand the number of casinos in New York have taken a sledge hammer to a slot machine outside the Capitol, saying they’re striking a blow against problem gambling.

The opponents say authorizing seven Las Vegas-style casinos will increase gambling addiction without fulfilling promises of jobs, tax breaks and school aid.

The nonprofit think tank Institute for American Values, the coalition Against Gambling in New York and other groups released several studies Tuesday. They say the data shows casinos are a bad gamble for New Yorkers, especially for the poorest residents.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature say the state will dedicate $500 per machine to continue to combat problem gambling. They say the $1 billion in revenue can be used for schools and to cut taxes.

  1. Casino’s definitely add jobs. Don’t forget about the jobs in the psychology, social services, addiction specialist, divorce lawyers, crime fighting, etc. fields as well!

  2. Casinos mean minimum wage jobs for locals. The high paying jobs go to people who have casino experience in other localities. Just ask Atlantic City.
