New York City’s biggest police union is asking a court to nix a law that would make it easier for people to bring racial profiling claims.
The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association sued the City Council on Tuesday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg filed his own suit against the same law last month.
The law was passed in August over Bloomberg’s veto. The measure grew out of concern about police stop-and-frisks and other techniques.
It would ease some legal standards for lawsuits claiming such tactics were used in a discriminatory way.
Like Bloomberg, the PBA says the measure impinges on state criminal law. The union also says the law is too vague and “leaves police officers to guess” how to do their jobs.
A City Council spokesman says the council will aggressively defend the law.
