The gemora says that women are stingy. Why would they be stingy when they did not earn the money?
I think the women provided to the guests harsh flour which was cheaper as they knew that husband would not approve the more expensive fine flour considered then stolen whereas Sarah gave the fine flour, knowing that Avraham will want her to give the more expensive fine flour. So really the men who made the money were stingy and the women just followed their husbands wishes.

“The gemora says that women are stingy.” – Source please?*
“Why would they be stingy when they did not earn the money?” – earning money ≠ stingy **

    *b’nichasa
** stingy would be (more) equal to jealousy

People are definitely more careful with their money when it comes from them working hard versus if they received it for free as a gift or from their spouse as support etc…. And that’s because when a person works hard for his money he feels it’s value and is not ready to give it up so fast like it’s worthless. It took him alot of time and work to earn it.

The Gemara doesn’t say that women are stingy as a general rule. It says that women look out for their children and and are therefore less likely to take from their families to give to other people.

Side note Sarah didn’t have children at that time

The genora Bava Metzia (87,1) the woman is more stingy than the man. The ilyun Yaakov on the Ein Yaakov explains that man are stingy but Avraham was not. It is unclear what kind of flour Sarah gave but certainly woman other than Sarah did not give fine flour which could be because of their husbands.

    Fake News Alert:
    1. Talk to any or your kids who may have worked as servers in a restaurant or other job where tipping is prevalent. That women are by far the better tippers is supported by a study by a major credit card company (google”tipping” and “men versus women”). Specifically, women are better tippers than men and baby boomers are more generous tippers than millennials,
    2. These days, even in segments of the frum tzibur, women are as likely to contribute to household income as men so the sexist notion that men are more reluctant to part with money because they work so hard to earn it is a bubba meisa.

GH, Maybe times have changed. The gemora says that the money is liked by tzadikim as they earn it honestly. So could be that man in the gemora’s time were stingy, so the wife honored his wishes.

    @RebEliezer
Maybe the women in your family don’t earn the money, not so in mine, ALL adults earn money
Mrs. CTL has been a designer/builder/realtor for more than 35 years
Both daughters are practicing attorneys, eldest also an RN
    Three Daughters-in Law practicing attorneys

MIL was a RE Broker for 50+ years

We are talking at Sarah Imenu’s time when women did not work not now.

I also think “generosity” is more embedded in women’s DNA then men. The notion that “male” tazdikim are the only ones earning their money honestly is another bubba meisa.

A couple of points: (1) Firstly as I’ve commented on a different thread about a similar topic that quoted this gemara as well I find it absolutely foolish that this gemara is thrown around and taken out of context. Look at my previous comments to see the pshat I quoted on this gemara that shows how un-sexist this gemara is. (2) Sam Klein, I hear you, but this isn’t completely accurate. For example in my relationship my wife is much more reluctant to spend money than I am. A similar situation is with my father. However, in order to move away from anecdotal evidence I suggest you look at Moneycrasher’s article about Men, women, and money. It will give you a whole new perspective about the gender spending gap you speak of. (i.e. women seem to be spending much more than men, but that is largely because often-time they buy all the household needs. in contrast, when comparing the spending habits and patterns of single men and women, men spent a lot more on household needs and almost all other categories). (3) GH, in regards to your point that women are bigger tippers it’s not so simple. There appears to be a slew of conflicting evidence based studies. For example “Fifty-nine percent of men say they leave a tip that exceeds 15 percent of the bill, versus just 47 percent of women.” Idon’t want to argue too much with you about this because I doubt either of us are experts on these matters (unless you’re a social scientist, in which case I would honestly love if you can please enlighten me and possibly explain the contradictions). (4) Additionally @GH. In regards to this that you say that “women are as likely to to contribute to household income as men so the sexist notion that men are more reluctant to part with money because they work so hard to earn it is a bubba meisa.” I think SK can retort that research studies still suggest that in the majority of marriages (63%) men are the main breadwinners. Therefore it can still suggest why it would be that men are stingier than women based on his presumption. (Please note that I already disagreed with him, I am simply explaining a logical flaw in your argument).

GH; again, after a simple Google search it appears that there is conflicting data. Some of the data provides evidence that women are more generous, and some of the data shows that men are more. More that how we think a reality is I believe it is important to look at the data provided. (Yes, I still believe this to be true even after the election polls).

GH, you are a bubba meisa. I just said that women did not work at Sarah Imenu’s time, so why were they stingy except for her? Nisiv above had a good answer.

Reb E: Agree that the data on tipping is anecdotal and subjective. I’m basing it on just one study published by researchers for a major credit card processing company which presumably used randomized data and guesstimates of the gender of the cardholder based on first names. Also, I’m not sure the inyanim that some bring down regarding feminine generosity really make a definitive point one way or the other.

We also have sources for being better in tzedokah – being at home, and giving food rather than money.
There is no contradiction – women are more tuned aware of spending, so they are thinking over these allocation decisions with more precision. I think this is true in our days also.

On a related note, Eruvin – a home owner is presumed to be out for the night if he is staying with his daughter [but not with his son, as an argument with the daughter-in-law may cause him to come back home to sleep]

    ?? Could you explain. Thanks
