latest data shows it is not an epidemic requiring lockdowns and masks at all times:
360 deaths under the age of 70
only 1,000 seriously or moderately sick
only 2% of the so-called infected are actually sick
According to their published figures, Israel’s death rate is such that 40,000 people die every year (BTW, that is the lowest death rate of any industrialized country). While it is sad for those who die, death is normal for older people (who make up most of those who die), and this has been the case since that unfortunate incident with one of our ancestors and a well known snake (as they translate it into English). The press might as well be complaining about the fact that humans have limited life spans. An additional 2000 deaths, out of 8 million people is not cause for the panic and horror that the media have made it into. And given that the frum community appears to have a much lower death rate (being younger on the average), it is easy to understand why frum Jews tend to be most skeptical than most of the governments’ excessive measures.
Unfortunately it’s attitudes such as those of “Pleaasestaycalm” and “akuperma” which are causing the Chareidi world to ignore the rules. They belittle any facts, justify all those who won’t obey the guidelines and generally feel that this is just a minor problem. Well, I don’t know about them, but I don’t recall knowing so many people who were so very ill in one given year. I don’t recall knowing so many people who were R”L niftar in any given year. I don’t recall so many people dying of the flu in any given recent flu season. This being in denial has caused the frum world to be skeptical, not as akuperma suggests, the lower death rate. People would rather believe these ignorant uninformed people than the facts right in front of their eyes. The facts are that there are people who are very sick out there! There are people who will have long term, if not permanent affects from their sicknesses! We read about new deaths every day! Get your heads out of the sand! Stop this denial of the very horrible truths out there and follow the guidelines. Is it harder for frum people to wear masks and distance themseleves from each other, than for the general public?! Why are so many people in this “am navon vechacham” acting so primitive?
