A large number of police officers were called in to subdue Charedi neighborhood in Geulah and Meah Shearim in an effort to quell the protests and enforce the directives of the Health Ministry. The Police were met with non-cooperative residents and a violent clash broke out.
Residents are claiming that during the enforcement, police officers acted in a violent manner while handing out tickets. They were stopping passersby without any reason at all.
According to the police department, the officers were patrolling the neighborhoods and enforcing that no non-essential store remainPolice ed open. The officers issued tickets and fines to those breaking the rules and not wearing masks. In addition, the officers handed out masks and important public relations messages to those they saw breaking the rules. The officers were met with a number of instances of violent provocation. They were cursed at and called Nazis. Police are working to restore calm. Thus far, five people have been arrested in the capital.
