The Internal Revenue Service says you must pay your taxes during the government shutdown. But don’t expect any refunds.
The IRS said Tuesday it will gladly accept tax returns and payments during the shutdown. In fact, they are required by law.
But, the agency said, it will not issue any tax refunds until the government resumes normal operations.
Most Americans filed their taxes in the spring. But more than 12 million filers asked for an automatic six-month extension, and those returns are due Oct. 15.
Got questions? Sorry, IRS call centers will not be manned, though automated ones are still running.
The agency did issue a temporary reprieve to taxpayers who are getting audited.

This isn’t exactly “refund” season. Any refund now means you overpaid your taxes and filed late, so you really can’t complain about a delay of a few days. After six months, another few days won’t kill you.
Typical IRS/Government attitude. YOU have to pay by the deadline but WE can hold up YOUR refund for however long we want. WE don’t have to keep to deadlines, only YOU do.
Akuperma – why is this not refund season? Returns on extensions are not considered late at all.
What’s the difference between getting a refund in October or in April?
Would love to hear this….
geshmakman,
i’ll answer that question
if you are going to get a refund you would know about it well in advance therefore you would file taxes asap whereas if your going to have to pay you will also know well in advance and try to delay them as much as possible so you can keep your money as long as possible
I see Coffee Addict – and what if you can’t file “asap” b/c you are waiting on information that isn’t ready yet untill September 15th such as a K-1 from a partnership or a corporation?
FYI – if you owe taxes, they are owed by 4/15, an extension is only on the filing of the return NOT payment of tax.
Thanks for answering! 🙂
