DEBLASIO’S JUNGLE: 30 Shot So Far This Weekend, Many Cops No Longer Have Weekends Off

At least 30 people have been shot, and at least 7 have been killed in gun violence so far this weekend in New York City.

Many NYPD officers will no longer have the entire weekend off anymore after NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea ordered schedule changes amid the insane spike in gun violence and other issues.

In an internal memo that was obtained by the Daily News, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea ordered the schedule changes to begin Aug. 31 and “remain in effect until further notice.”.

Shea said in the memo that two-thirds of officers under the rank of sergeant who normally have off on Saturdays and Sundays will see changes to their schedules.

Under the changes, a third of officers will have to start a Sunday through Thursday shift, while another third will have to start a Tuesday through Saturday shift. The final third will not see changes to their shifts.

Shea said the schedule changes are “due to the combination of increased violence, ongoing protests, COVID-19 restrictions and reduction to overtime funding.”

The city has seen a rise in gun violence this summer, particularly on weekends.

According to the Daily News, many of the department’s 35,000 officers already work either Saturday or Sunday shifts.

  1. I hope askunim (community activists / organizers) are working directly with the White House to prepare rapid emergency and even military response for Labor Day should that become necessary. Can’t trust de Blasio (or the Governor) to keep the people safe. I also suggest numerous citizen Livestreams across all platforms and responsible media outlets (such as Chanel 9 AUSTRALIA) to film constantly so the country and the world has a window into Brooklyn/NYC. There also might be real time legal advice as to how far people can go to protect themselves. And of course daven.

  2. Old Crown Heights,

What would be helpful is not “emergency and even military response”, which would be illegal (Feds can’t enforce local laws and military can’t do law enforcement within the US at all), but help in stopping the illegal gun traffic The database of firearms transactions isn’t even computerized and you can still legally buy a firearm without a background check in most of the United States. That makes it almost impossible to stop the gunrunning. Feds can and should stop the illegal gun traffic but the gun lobby, when it isn’t engaged in massive grifting, won’t allow Republicans to do anything about it.

Joe Biden does now owe anything to the gun lobby and hopefully when he is President he will be able to take this on. It will take a lot of resources.

  3. DeBlasio, you have made your bed. Now go to sleep and wait for your gun toting buddies to let loose some bullets to your head. AND NOT BE PENALIZED.

  4. If Deblasio is incapable of doing his job (Which he definitely is) then is there no way to “impeach” him. Or is that word only relevant when the Public Officer is Republican? DeBlasio has taken the city back to pre David Dinkins ym”s days.

It’s incredible how it takes years to build but no time to destroy… Blasio has only destroyed in short amount of time what his predecessors have spent years of hard work. WHERES OUR STOP n FRISK???!!! Oh it’s unconstitutional!! 500 ppl have been shot by blacks in last few weeks…. But if one black gets killed by a White…… Blasio busy arranging protests!! He should be fired immediately one way or another.

  5. As i predicted in my other posts idiots like charliehall will blame NRA and Republicans for NY lawlessness. charliehall, can you please give me the name of that place where I “legally buy a firearm without a background check” i want to go there and by lots of guns.

  6. Moishe, in most of the USA when a private person sells or gives away or lends someone a firearm they do not need to run a background check on the buyer. Indeed private people can’t run background checks on people, for obvious reasons. Would you want anyone to be able to run a check on anyone else?! Of course not. Only licensed dealers, who are in the business of selling firearms, have terminals on which they can request checks, and they are required to run such checks.

So yes, you can legally buy a firearm without a background check from any private person who happens to have one to sell, but of course you can’t buy lots of guns that way because each person is not going to have a lot of guns to sell. except in the unusual case where they’re selling off a large collection, perhaps because they inherited it.

And yes, charliehall is being dishonest as usual about this, by pretending that this is a significant way in which criminals get their weapons. And in referring to “the gun lobby” in a way that he would never use of “the free speech lobby” or “the abortion lobby” or “the public health lobby” or “the anti-racism lobby”. The NRA is the nation’s largest and most effective civil liberties organization and deserves at least as much respect as the ACLU and the NAACP (both of which have lost all right to respect in the last two decades).

  7. Milhouse, how many guns your bought or sold lately? The last time i sold my handgun to a friend i had to go with him to a local FLL (Federal Firearms License) to register the sale and run instant background check on him.
