So there are many reasons why one might borrow a book from the library. Student, research, hobbies, or just for reading on free time. There are many advantages to borrowing a book rather than buying at full price. At least for me I know that (if I do read at all), most books I will only read once and have no use for it after. Which means its a waste of money and space which it takes up. But such a downside to borrowing a book especially ones that people take home, they get filthy, earwax and nose stuff all over the pages aside from most likely they have been in the bathroom and all over the bathroom floor sweeping it up. How disgusting is this and are there any alternatives aside from browsing and trying to only pick out books that look new condition? What are your thoughts of borrowing books. Unsanitary to say the least?

Fortunately, Hashem created our bodies with something called an immune system that does a marvelous job of protecting us from things like this. In every part of our lives, we are constantly being exposed to germs, and guess what – our bodies deal with it! Whether it’s going to the grocery and pushing a shopping cart that someone else touched, bringing in the mail that the mail carrier handled, etc…our bodies deal with so much on an everyday basis. Library books don’t strain their abilities as much as you think.

Including borrowing books that can be read on your computer, or handheld device. Check to see if your library has Overdrive/Libby, 3M Cloud, or Hoopla.

July 29, 2020 9:30 am at 9:30 am #1887742akupermaParticipantThe original posting made an argument for ebooks (though there is no way to read them on Shabbos) and for purchasing books. If you are a fanatic germ-phobe, you probably want to avoid library copies of children’s books (in particular). In dealing with Covid19, libraries discovered that if you quarantine a book for several days most common viruses die, though some microorganisms can probably survive almost anything.

Well we all controlledJuly 31, 2020 12:39 am at 12:39 am #1888322hu bachaParticipant“akuperma” i never heard of quarantining a library book. that actually defeats the purpose of a library book since quarantine is 2 weeks, and the book is due back in the library in 2 weeks. i think is better to put a mask on the book and read it from 6 feet away, oh chas veshalom if you come 5.11 feet close, the book might breathe on you, and you will catch corona. if your 6 feet away you can open up the book somehow and zoom in with your smart phone ( the yeshivsh ppl that dont have smart phones are smart enough not to quarantine a book) and take a look. sounds complicated. lechoyra better to buy a book at least you will save 5 cents for returning it late
July 31, 2020 7:30 pm at 7:30 pm #1888509rightwriterParticipanthu bacha- you forgot to mention goggles. What will mask and gloves help without the newly advised goggles?
“lechoyra better to buy a book at least you will save 5 cents for returning it late”
-well ya save 5 cents but spend a lot more on something you will likely read once if it even turns out to be interesting enough to do so. Its a shame you just cant clean books as you can a cd or any other media type.
Or as ive mentioned just go for the books which are brand new/new condition, which is impossible currently since all you can do is order and pickup so no way to choose. They do update books and get new copies but unfortunately not often enough and they absolutely love to save as much as they can by keeping a worn out filthy book in circulation as long as they can.
“No Budget” what can you do.August 1, 2020 10:51 pm at 10:51 pm #1888615akupermaParticipantThe Library of Congress came up with the quarantine period for books based on experiments for how long Covid19 remains alive on books. It appears most public libraries are adopting similar procedures. For libraries where you have to order the books and then pick them up, this removes any chance of getting Covid19 from a library book.
