The US is “unlikely” to achieve herd immunity to the coronavirus even with a vaccine, according to the country’s leading public health expert, who warned that a “general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling” is likely to thwart vaccination efforts.
In an interview with CNN, Dr Anthony Fauci also said people not wearing masks was “a recipe for disaster” and said of the Trump administration’s attempts at contact tracing: “I don’t think we’re doing very well.”
The US reported a record number of new coronavirus cases in a single day on Friday, with 36 states reporting a rise in infections and Texas, Florida and Arizona particularly badly hit. With more than 2.5m coronavirus cases and more than 125,000 deaths, the US accounts for about 25% of all coronavirus cases and deaths worldwide.
Countries including the US are scrambling to develop a vaccine, and Fauci has said one could be available by the end of 2020 or early 2021. But he suggested the vaccine would not be fully effective.
“The best we’ve ever done is measles, which is 97% to 98% effective,” Fauci told CNN. “That would be wonderful if we get there. I don’t think we will. I would settle for [a] 70%, 75% effective vaccine.”
Polls have shown that many Americans are skeptical of a vaccine. In May only half of Americans said they would get one if it becomes available, while a Washington Post survey showed 27% would likely refuse a vaccine.
Fauci was asked if herd immunity could be achieved through two-thirds of the population taking a vaccine that was only 70% to 75% effective.
“No – unlikely,” he said.
“There is a general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling among some people in this country – an alarmingly large percentage of people, relatively speaking,” Fauci said, adding that the government has “a lot of work to do” to educate people about vaccines.

Misleading headline. He’s not saying it wont work because of a small group of people who don’t vax. He’s saying that Americans as a people – right now – are not into it. And therefore most people wont get it. BIG difference!
herd imunnity will come without the vaccine, since most people are getting it so we dont need the vaccine anymore.

Only older people take the shingles vaccine to protect themselves. If you want it to work, then all the newborns need the shingles vaccine , too? When has this suddenly changed ? I guess they need to make money so everyone needs to take it . By the way the vaccine is meant to sterilize people and A 19 year old girl in Israel died from the corona vaccine. I guess it’s working . This is their end goal.

I’m not sure how many of you out there would take the chance of taking a vaccine for a disease which has the same fatality rate as a flu, but after listening to the GSK whistleblower information, and the possibility of an over 90% infertility rate within 7-10 years of the vaccine, should give any thinking human being pause before sending their family to be tried upon.

One poll showed HALF of Americans would refuse the vaccine -many citing safety concerns, others just not worried about corona due to their age and health status. Anti vaxxers definitely do not come close to that percentage…. at most they are 10% of the population, given current vaccination levels. (Probably even lower) Is it possible that anti vaxxers have simply opened up the public’s eye to the fact that vaccines (especially rushed vaccines) can harm? I sure hope so.
Fauci (to the extent you can believe that self-admitted liar) is saying that the immune-compromised and others who legitimately cannot get vaccinated will remain unprotected by herd immunity, and that to a much lesser extent the general (vaccinated) public will also have slightly less protection. As for anti-vaxxers, they will not get a free ride with the coronavirus vaccine as they selfishly do with other vaccines.

IHateCommunism: the flu vaccine does not provide immunity because influenza is an extremely unstable virus and mutates so much that the vaccine is barely affective to one strain and is almost completely unaffective against other strains. In fact the flu vaccine gives relatively little protection but it does give some protection and its a dead virus so there is no risk in doing it so you might as well get the 10% protection or whatever.
A word of hope is that its possible that a vaccine will be safe even for immunocompromised people meaning that even if there is no herd immunity they could get a shot at personal immunity (pun intended) also if there are multiple approved vaccines even if one is ineffective in a person they may get another chance to try another. although we wont really know until they finish doing lots of testing .

She was overweight and seriously infected with complications before she was given a “passive” vaccine in a last ditch effort to save her, as a last resort. She did not die directly from the vaccine at all.

5% number was told to me directly by Highly Respected pediatrician with over two decades of experience in the field.
5% of serious side effects include autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, serious allergies and childhood cancers. Not everyone reacts to vaccines the same way. The more and the earlier we give them the more likelihood of side effects. Another 10% get mild side effects. The rest, 85% have no side effects, so most kids do OK with most vaccines.
Unfortunately, those 5% of kids and their parents, have to face doctors who live in denial, they claim side effects are rear and brand new chronic illness that their kid got soon after the shot is just a coincidence. Because of that 90% of adverse reactions never get reported to VAERS according to CDC. That still adds up 40000+ reports annually. Very few families actually get compensated, yet, as of October 2019, $4.2 Billion in compensation payouts. If everyone who actually got hurt would get compensated US would go Broke!
