Speaking to someone who was personally well acquainted with the bochurim in Mir yeshiva and Brisk in pre-war Europe, the “mainstream” of today is avery far cry from the standards of that time. The yeshiva bochurim of that era that played such a major role in keeping the torch of torah alive would by today’s “mainstream” be considered left wing modern orthodox and definitely not “mainstream”.
