Chareidim May Join Forces in Haifa Race

haifaWhile there are tensions between Yahadut Hatorah factions in the Jerusalem race, B”H the atmosphere in the Haifa race is a bit more harmonious. Both Agudas Yisrael and Degel Hatorah have agreed to run under a combined ticket in the upcoming Haifa municipal elections. The party is now negotiating with Shas over a possible unified chareidi ticket in that city.

The agreement was signed hours before Yom Kippur and the first slot in the Haifa race goes to Degel City Councilman Michael Alper. The second slot goes to Agudah. There is a rotation agreement for the deputy mayor slot. Agudah will hold the deputy mayoral post first. In the event the party earns a third seat, that too would be in the rotation agreement. Representatives of Degel and Agudah would split serving the term in the third slot.

The belief is that together with Shas, the combined chareidi ticket can earn four seats in the Haifa race.

  1. Hareidim are a small minority in Haifa, and therefore Achdus is logical. In places such as Jerusalem and Bnei Brak, Achdus is counterproductive from a political perspective given Israel’s proportinal system for voting. Only a “first past the post” or a “runoff” system rewards achdus.
