MK (The Movement) Elazar Stern is moving ahead with a bill that would compel government agencies to use the Hebrew date alongside the Gregorian date on all official documents and identity cards. Stern feels this simply step could have a significant impact on increasing awareness regarding the Jewish calendar.
Stern explains that a study conducted in Tishrei 5773 shows that 50% of the nation’s residents are not aware of their birthday on the Jewish calendar since their lives revolve around the Gregorian calendar only. 41% of the respondents in that study admit the Jewish calendar is not significant for them as they label themselves as not religious.
Stern believes this simple step can truly play a significant role in bringing the Jewish calendar into the lives of many Israelis who today remain unaware of its significance.
