What pshat meant to the Rishonim is complicated. It is a simple truth that they did not feel beholden to midrashim, including the drush of the Talmud. Realize, that they had a lot more midrashim than we do. Including some that where written by their own contemporaries. (Some midrashim quote the Rambam etc.)
