LISTEN: Karliner Rebbe Chastises Those Who Wish To Re-Open Chareidi Yeshivas

In a break from custom, the Karlin-Stoliner Rebbe spoke to his Chassidim over the phone on Thursday evening in order to offer them encouragement in this difficult time. The Rebbe, who normally refuses to use a microphone or loudspeaker when talking to his Chassidim, allowed this act of closeness in the hopes of bringing together his Chassidim.

During his speech, he attacked those who he claimed were acting with carelessness and levity with regard to pikuach nefesh by asking to re-open Charedi Yeshivas and Talmudei Torah.

“All of the regulations telling us to be careful are still in effect and even though it is difficult we need to safeguard these rules and there is no room for leniency. It is very difficult to be locked in one’s home together with family especially for those with children. We need to strengthen one another and bring in a positive atmosphere to the home. The Cheders will begin again each student in their home and it is the responsibility of the parents to make sure that this works. We need to make sure our children learn and review and keep a regular schedule as much as possible,” the Rebbe said.

He continued: “Sadly we hear, even during these difficult times, there are those who claim to be wise in their own eyes who want to reopen the yeshivas and Talmudei Torah. They are degrading the value of Pikuach Nefesh. Some of these people even claim to have asked rabbonim for permission. I’m not sure I would trust them when they say that, because anyone who degrades pikuah nefesh of others so easily, should not be trusted.”

“We all know what happened during Sefiras Ha’Omer and we all know the customs of mourning that was caused by a lack of love for one’s neighbor. Now is the time to increase love of your fellow man. Help one another as much as possible. There are those who need help with physical, tangible things, and there are others who are under a lot of stress. We need to help each other out.”

  1. I think that playing a small clip feeds into those who may look to criticize. It would be of much greater service that you play the whole thing and hear his advice about ahavas chaveirim, chesed, ahavas Yisroel, davening alone etc…. so one gets the flavor of the whole thing. Secondly- he is only speaking to his own Chassidim, not to the general public. He has a responsibility to continually educate them how to see and how to perceive events, circumstances and how to properly respond if you are a Karliner chossid. He is not speaking to the general public.

  2. WOW – THIS IS A DISASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU PICK AND PULL WHAT WILL MAKE NICE HEADLINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE ‘SHMUZ’ WAS ABOUT 4 MIN AND YOU PULLED OUT 50 SECONDS OF IT CUZ IT SOUNDS SENSATIONAL
IN ANY CASE EVERYONE KNOWS THAT THE KARLNER REBBA IS ANTI ANTI PUBLICITY SO I’M SURE ANYONE WHO POSTS SOMETHING LIKE THIS WILL BURN IN GEHENIM – YOU BETTER REMOVE THIS IMMEDIATELY!!! TO POST HIS RECORDING IS A NEW LOW –

    REMOVE IMMEDIATELY!!!!!

  3. One can only have words of appreciation and praise for the Karlin Stolin Rebbe Shlita, a giant both of Torah and middos who always engages his brain in gear before opening his mouth.

  4. “We all know what happened during Sefiras Ha’Omer and we all know the customs of mourning that was caused by a lack of love for one’s neighbor.

What happened during sefiras ha’omer was caused by a lack of RESPECT for each other’s opinion. Each one insisted not only that he was right, but that the other must accept his opinion. Each one could not tolerate that someone else, having considered the same information, could come to a different conclusion.

Just because you truly believe that we must all remain in strict isolation, and you may even be correct, that doesn’t give you the right to impose your view on someone else. If someone else decides to make a minyan, or open a school, or do business in what SEEMS TO HIM to be a responsible manner, you have to respect his decision and accept his right to be wrong.

The sin’ah that we’re seeing in our community against those who dare to deviate from the majority opinion is EXACTLY what caused the plague among R Akiva’s talmidim.

  5. Milhouse; the whole premise of your comment is based on a misunderstanding. The Karliner Rebbe was speaking on a private hotline to his own Chasidim, he was not “imposing his view on anyone else”.
It’s not his fault that his private comments to his kehila were plastered all over the internet without his consent.
It is well known that he never makes public proclamations nor ever speaks publicly outside of his Kehila.
