According to a Kuwaiti media report, Syria has succeeded in obtaining the advanced Russian S-300 anti-aircraft system. In addition, according to a Voice of Israel Radio report, the Russian ships in the area are planning to unload additional military hardware for the Syrians.
The report of the S-300 delivery appeared in the Al Rai newspaper, based in Kuwait. This system would shift the regional balance of power and present a formidable challenge for the Israel Air Force since it can simultaneously fire at 12 targets from a distance of 200km (120 miles) at altitudes of 27km (16.5 miles).
Israeli leaders have released statements over recent months that if Syria manages to take possession of the S-300 system Israel would not permit the system to go operational.
