After a long and sweaty journey, Bill de Blasio and Joseph Lhota fulfilled the dream of their party’s voters’, respectfully, in granting New York City voters a choice in the upcoming election for mayor of New York City.

For the Democrats, Mr. De Blasio’s stunning win gives them a chance, after 20 years of Republican control of the City, to change course and implement the policies they feel are best capable to serve all sectors in one of the most diverse citys. On the other hand, for Republican and independent voters, Joe Lhota is the most suitable guy to offer a vision of fiscal responsibility and public safety, giving those who fear of the City moving backward their only chance of consecutive Republican control of City Hall.

“Together, we spoke clearly and courageously: we want to change our city so that it works for all New Yorkers,” Mr. de Blasio wrote in a email to supporters. The progressive change we need isn’t easy, and there isn’t a more important challenge to undertake. But we’re New Yorkers, and there isn’t a city on earth more able to meet it.”

For his part, Mr. Lhota called on his former rivals, John Catsimatidis and George McDonald, to come together and “unify our Party; to strengthen it and prepare it for victory in November.”

  1. De Blasio will probably be a mayor in the great tradition of his – Democratic predecessors. They usually weren’t so bad, except for the part about bankrupting the city and chasing employers away. But otherwise, it was fun.
