The NYPD has begun patrolling the parks and streets to ensure residents are practicing appropriate social distancing as the number of cases explodes.

The number of cases of COVID-19 in NYC have increased to more than 15,000, with nearly 25,000 throughout the state.

“We were looking at a freight train moving across the country. We’re now looking at a bullet train. We haven’t flattened the curve and the curve is actually increasing,” Gov. Cuomo said.

Cuomo said the apex could hit in 14 days.

He said the new projections suggests that the number of hospital beds needed could be as high as 140,000. The previous projection was 110,000.

Cuomo is urging the Trump administration to help secure ventilators.

“We have been working around the, scouring the globe, we’ve procured about 7,000 ventilators. We need at a minimum an additional 30,000 ventilators. You cannot buy them, you cannot find them. Every state is trying to get them,” Cuomo said.

White House’s coronavirus response coordinator, Dr. Deborah L. Birx, said nearly 1 in 1,000 people in the region has contracted the virus – five times the rate of other areas.

Construction of the Federal Emergency Management Agency temporary hospital at the convention center will start this week and hopefully be done within 10 days, Cuomo said.

Capacity at the convention center could eventually be expanded to 2,000 patients, he said.
