How many first borns out there realized they may not have a siyum to attend this erev pesach? ๐ฌ
March 23, 2020 9:29 am at 9:29 am #1842010JosephParticipantWe’re making an illicit Siyum.
Just ten of us. So we’re within current regulations. And maintaining a six-foot distance.

Hopefully none. Its still early Start horiyos can do a blatt a day and still have wiggle room .
I’m not sure why anyone would think you need a minyan for a siyum
March 23, 2020 11:44 am at 11:44 am #1842025yitzymotchaParticipantI’m a few blatt behind from finishing Brachas in daf yomi so its working out perfect.
Can you do this live stream?March 23, 2020 11:44 am at 11:44 am #1842035lowerourtuition11210ParticipantR Shlomo Zalman Auerbach paskend one can listen to a siyum on the telephone. RRabbi Heinemann stated in his webinar this past Thursday that one can make a siyum beyechidus.
March 23, 2020 11:45 am at 11:45 am #1842052JosephParticipantFor those b’chors unable to attend a Siyum on Erev Pesach, they will have a fast day. A Siyum isn’t obligatory for us. And it isn’t like they lack experience with fasting.
So no need for that “Yikes” smiley. Rather it should be a happy one: ๐
March 23, 2020 12:40 pm at 12:40 pm #1842091mattisyahuParticipantTrying to kill people this year with your siyum?
Regardless, as Pesach is a couple of weeks away, I think you will change your mind by then.
If you run any sort of projection here, you would realize that the number of cases each day now, will increase 10 – 20 times the amount (if not more in our community due the extensive social mixing) towards the second half of next week.
Keep on looking for ways to be smarter than everyone else… Good going. Just know that for every additional person that gets sick and needs intubation (an unfortunately high percent need that), will mean a doctor having to choose which person gets that tube and which one does not.
Of course if the medical supplies can be ramped up or this talked about treatment is effective it may not be that dire, but that is where we stand right now.
Be smart, think about your civic duty to your fellow yid and everyone in society, even if you can’t think about yourself and your family. The situation we are in is a lot worse than many of you realize. If you realized you would not even suggest that you are making an illicit siyum following the guidelines.
March 23, 2020 1:20 pm at 1:20 pm #1842113GAONParticipantJoseph.
There is absolutely no chiyuv to have any minyan at a siyum. The only ones you should have is other bichorim.
You can be mesayum mesecehet Tamid. Or a sefer in Navi as well.March 23, 2020 1:20 pm at 1:20 pm #1842115โ๏ธcoffee addictParticipantsyag,
Hopefully none will need a siyum because moshiach will be here soon

March 23, 2020 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm #1842167yitzymotchaParticipantIts true that you don’t need a minyan. I once overslept so I called my rov and asked if there was any heter to eat. Instead he told me to come over and he made a siyum for me. He finished Rosh Hashana. Then he told me the rema says the minhag is to redo the eiruv chatzaros Erev pesach so he had me be zoche in the matza for his block but he said we won’t make a bracha because itsa a safek if there’s an eruv in Flatbush.
March 23, 2020 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #1842189The Shady CharediParticipant@CTLAWYER and @the_rest_of_you_too,
Be aware that if you have a son who is a bechor below bar-mitzvah then many poskim say to fast on his behalf. Also, some poskim say the same for a deceased father who was a bechor.
March 23, 2020 5:55 pm at 5:55 pm #1842191rebyonosonParticipantHaGaon HaRov Neventzal paskins that you can make a siyum over zoom or phone (I think he was specifically asked about taanis bechoros)

March 24, 2020 9:04 am at 9:04 am #1842402takahmamashParticipantI have already been informed of two “virtual siymim” in our locality. And yes, I am a bechor.
March 24, 2020 11:56 am at 11:56 am #1842481HealthParticipantI once wasn’t able to go to a Siyom, and I fasted. It’s horrible breaking the fast on wine!
March 24, 2020 12:14 pm at 12:14 pm #1842510GoldilocksParticipantHealth: Is it worse than breaking your fast on wine following Yom Kippur (or Tisha B’av, when it occurs on Shabbos or Sunday)?

No, not a typo. However, this very old minhag (approximately 700 years) seems to have expanded in some circles, including the aforementioned addition of the deceased father. If you are looking for the original minhag, then
1. Women first born also need to fast
2. Non-bechorim who are hygienically scrupulous (ืืืกืื ืืกืื) also fast. How many abide by the original minhag?
March 24, 2020 2:24 pm at 2:24 pm #1842526GoldilocksParticipantRational: Yes, someone did tell me once that I really should be fasting on Erev Pesach, since I am a first-born. The person couldn’t find a source for it though, and I didn’t like the idea too much, so I just let it go.
If you have a source, I would love to hear about it (and you just may convince me to do it)!March 24, 2020 2:25 pm at 2:25 pm #1842552midwesternerParticipantDr. Hall: Impressive accomplishment! May you be zoche to complete all Yerushalmi!!!

March 24, 2020 4:43 pm at 4:43 pm #1842660Reb EliezerParticipantMaseches Tamid is from 25-33 dafin around 8 blat.

First of all, you can use grape juice, but Pesach – GJ is a big problem.
2nd, having wine & then eating 2 seconds later isn’t such a prob. By Pesach, that isn’t the case.March 24, 2020 7:15 pm at 7:15 pm #1842697JosephParticipantDoes a b’chor born via Cesarian Section have to have a Siyum or fast?
March 24, 2020 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #1842724Reb EliezerParticipantThere is a question did Hashem kill the bechorim or the maahchis? They answer that from the father only Hashem knows but from the mother even the mashchis knows. The Baer Hetev 470,1 refers to the Chok Yaakov who leaves it in a question about yotzei dofen, cesarian section.

Big deal.
If someone like me can be a bechor, then it obviously doesn’t have too much meaning.

March 26, 2020 6:23 am at 6:23 am #1843298MilhouseParticipantI have several times made a siyum on Tamid, either because I missed the morning minyan, or because I had no minyan available. (One year I was on a plane, and another year I was in a place with only one other Jew.) It takes me about an hour or a little longer to go through it (just the text, no Rashi).
But one year I was unable to leave my home or to learn Torah until chatzos, and faced the prospect of having to fast until an hour after chatzos. Fortunately someone was found to come and make a siyum
