Running second in the Democratic primary, according to the most recent public opinion polls, Bill Thompson took it to his home-turf, campaigning in Borough Park along with Assemblyman Dov Hikind, Friday afternoon. Mr. Thompson, who’s very well known in the community, received a warm welcome as he strolled down 13th Avenue greeting Orthodox Jewish voters.
As a favorite in the Orthodox Jewish community, Mr. Thompson didn’t have to work too hard convincing voters to vote for him. In fact, most of the voters Mr. Thompson randomly greeting as they walked by, were very receptive of his candidacy, wishing him good luck and promising to vote for him.
“First of all, He is most probably going to win, so I like to go with the winner,” one Orthodox Jew told the candidates and his surrogates as they pressed him as for why he’s committed voting for Thompson. Another voter, enthusiastically told Mr. Thompson he’s been waiting for years for this moment.
With Assemblyman Hikind already doing the introduction for him, and the fact that he was warmly greeted by almost everyone he greeted, Mr. Thompson took the time to taste some honey cookies, chocolates and cheese danishes, as he stopped in bakeries and candy stores along the way. Skipping on the traditional gefilte fish, Mr. Thompson took the challenge and sat down over a plate of ‘Chulent’ at Deli 52.
“Everything sweet before Rosh Hashanah, before the new year. Right everybody? sweet.. calories,” Mr. Hikind quipped. “If the people help bill become mayor the City will be sweet,” Ben Barber added.
