US President George W. Bush on Saturday met in Sharm el-Sheikh with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) as the two continued talks towards achieving an agreement between the PA and Israel.
Bush told the PA leader “it breaks my heart to see the wasted potential of the Palestinian people”, adding a peace agreement with Israel will bring an end to the “suffering of the Palestinian people”.
Bush continued his now-regular mantra, insisting a deal between the sides will be achieved before he completes his current term in office.
In a joint press conference, Abu Mazen acknowledged the American president’s commitment to bringing the two sides together, stressing the PA is working tenaciously towards achieving an agreement.
The two leaders expressed concerns regarding the goings-on in Lebanon and the threats to the government of Fuad Siniora by “extremist elements”.
