Video & Photos: Large Turn-Out In Friday’s Protest in Crown Heights

YW-CH Protest-0002.jpg[VIDEO & PHOTO LINKS IN EXTENDED STORY] At 4:30PM on Erev Shabbos (Friday), close to a thousand residents of Crown Heights marched through the neighborhood blocking traffic, and holding signs – to protest the vicious assault and robbery of a 16-year-old Yeshiva student on Thursday night.

Many people thought that the protest would have a small turnout due to the rainy weather, but amazingly the crowd turned out to be quite strong.

The march began on Albany and Empire Boulevard, where the assault took place, went past the 71st Pct, and ended Eastern Parkway. The NYPD did not expect such a turnout, and quickly called for a “Level 1 Mobilization” to assist in keeping law & order.

Besides for one or two isolated incidents, the march was peaceful.

YWN had originally posted that the march was postponed pending an adequate NYPD and NYC response to the recent attacks, but a last minute email circulating in Crown Heights brought the residents out anyways.

  1. The NYTimes claimed the number was 300. But considering the Times anti-Jewish leanings it is no surprise they would downplay the turnout.

  2. Klal Yisroel is being asked to please say Tehillim for —Alon Yisrel ben Irit— the bochur that was beaten Thursday night.

  3. They should repeat the demonstration next week with all the frum jews of NYC standing beside their Jewish brethren in Crown Heights. Just next time they should have ample time notice and not do it as a last minute thing.

  4. on shabbos two Bochurim were attacked on Eastern parkway in front of a police officer the officer chased after the attackers (without calling backup) who returned two minutes later and throw rocks at the bochurim the police didn’t catch them no arrests were made.

  5. I think its time where we demonstrate like they do in eretz yisroel and get the cops a little scared. Be brave and fight hard

  6. Just say the word, and I will be there with my family to march once again in support of our Crown Heights neighbors (rain or shine-Erev Shabbos or otherwise). They deserve and need all the support they can get. Some serious attitude and policy changes have to come about before it is truly too late for someone. This latest attack is just one of many others that have not been publicized by media. Crime goes unchecked on the streets without repercussion, and the ghetto blacks have taken advantage of the situation. The unfortunate double standard attitude and behavior of the police force and other known officials has caused the neighborhood to live in mounting fear and frustration. I say-march every day if we need to. Just don’t stay silent when you are hit-literally in the face. That never solved anything. Shortly after the march ended, a police car went around announcing a $2,000 dollar reward for any information leading to the arrest of the attacker. This was in an obvious reaction to the crowd of protesters. The question is, do we have to march every time to get the police to mete out justice and get out on the streets to do their job right? I hope others are as frustrated as I am at the state of injustice in this community. I care!

  7. That Guy protesting at the end I thought did a decent job. But why bring in arabs? The problem there is the blacks, no? when is the next demonstration? With YWN news and some other blogs – we should be able to get 50k people in no time

  8. To Tina18.

The incident he was referring to is
of the Jewish guy that had his kippah
stolen by arabs while they were screaming
“Allah….”. True the problem in Crown Heights
crimes is committed by Black people.
There are a lot of law abiding African Americans
it’s just that in that place the only
people with money are the Jews.

  9. Why is this guy talking about Arabs, he kind of sounded like a fool. The problems they are having are from the local black population .Why is he ranting about Arabs, I think he lost himself in his self appointed spokesmenship roll. How is the local precinct supposed to protect people in crown heights from attacks from Arabs in the new York area.

  10. “I think its time where we demonstrate like they do in eretz yisroel and get the cops a little scared. Be brave and fight hard”

Of cousre I bet if we start making trouble and trying to intimidate the cops into doing what we want, it will work great. I bet it won’t lead to antisemitism, massive chillul Hashem, and the police thinking they need to clamp down on those rowdy Jews who already won’t cooperate with them.

Or maybe you should wake up to reality (or at least the US) where you can’t get whatever you want by screaming and fighting.

  11. Recently the Lubavitch/Crown Heights community has become a nightmare neighborhood for all its Jewish residents. Fellow Yidden: It’s high time to reach out to our community and assist in whatever way you can in ending the crime epidemic, and the epidemic of indifference by the NYPD. The only time the perpatrators of violence (against the Crown Heights Jewish community) get arrested by the NYPD, is when they are first nabbed by the shomrim.

We need to end this massive injustice and get as much legal talent as we could get from our fellow frum yidden to sue the city for REAL protection. Al Taamod al dam roiecha.
