Future Of LICH Hospital Complicated By Ruling

LICH1A state Supreme Court judge who two years ago approved the transfer of an ailing Brooklyn community hospital’s assets to a state agency has vacated her original order.

Judge Carolyn Demarest said Tuesday in an order vacating her 2011 decision that SUNY Downstate Medical center may have mislead her in 2011 when it said it would keep Long Island College Hospital operating despite its money woes.

LICH has about 18 properties valued at close to $1 billion.

She recommends that LICH’s old administrator, Continuum Health Partners, manage the hospital.

In a statement Continuum says it cannot reassume management of LICH.

SUNY Downstate says it spent millions trying to turn LICH around and must exit the hospital as part of a broader plan to restructure SUNY Downstate.
