The New York State Thruway Authority and New York State Police Troop T Wednesday announced the launch of the Statewide seat belt enforcement initiative, “Buckle Up New York.” The 14-day campaign will begin Monday, May 19 and continue until Sunday, June 1.
Beginning Monday, May 19, and continuing through Sunday, June 1, Troop T, along with law enforcement across New York State, will staff safety restraint checkpoints and patrol the 570-mile New York State Thruway ensuring seatbelt compliance.
State Police Troop T issued approximately 17,000 tickets to motorists not wearing their seat belts while traveling the Thruway during 2007.
Drivers and front-seat passengers who are 16 years of age and older maybe fined up to $50 for failing to buckle up. Drivers who fail to have children properly secured may be fined $100 and receive three points on their license.

i think that this is a very good thing they should enforce it here in bp and in lakewood where evryone takes more ppl than they are alloed and nobody cares abt seatbelt. they should enforce seatbelt in the rear of the cars as well
all you gotta do is remember gov. jon corzine – 5 seconds to put it on and he would have been ok like the other people in the car
This is just a revenue booster for the State. This is free country and i should be free to drive unbuckled.I will take responsibilty for my actions. How many people buckle up because they belive they will be saved from an accident or they are “afraid of the ticket”. I personally have rigged a phony seat belt strap which I drape over myself when i go thru the enforcement zone.also if you have noticed Bloomberg has used this as a scare tactic to get people to use Mass Transit. He posts the Cops at the entrances to manhattan and gives tickets for seat belts and cell phone violations to discourage people from driving in to the city.
