There is a big argument in Maseches Rosh Hashanah 28,1 if מצות צריכות כוונה if we need to keep in mind to be yotze a mitzva. If we don’t need it, what about having a reverse kavono, thinking I don’t want to be yotzei the mitzva.? The difference between humans and animals is that humans think, so why should we not needed? Chasan Sofer explains that stoma lishma, if a person wants to do a mitzva, he does it for the proper reason. It could also be the Ritva in Tractate Pesochim explains that making a brocho before performance of the mitzva, indicates inherently that he wants to be yotzei the mitzva. The Mechaber paskens that we do need kavona, and the brocho is not indicative, but a mitzva derabonon does not required it.
