I wonder why the Agudah didn’t have Rechnitz speak?
He always has a different angle and good content.
He might have been able to break the monotonous, repetitious program.
And if not Rechnitz, why not somebody else with a unique style?

    #1818139

They are scared he will say the truth about some topic, like he did in Lakewood about kids not being accepted into yeshivas. They hate his guts because he has a big mouth.
    Truth hurts!

I think entire program needs to be redone. Needs way more music. People want Benny Friedman, MBD, Fried, Leiner, Schwekey….and we ca have Rechnitz compose some new songs.

No on eis interested in drashos and drashos. We want music and singing and dancing. This looked like a levaya from the first minute of Rabbi Mandel crying and ending with Helfgot crying.

    Enough.

I was at the siyum. It was ok. That’s about it. I would of appreciated a regular speech, and not one from a gadol.

    #1818138

    rechnitz would of been epic.

    what about YY?

The “wheres waldo” guy got more attention then any speaker lol

Louie Scheiner should be taking care of the program. Food would of been off the charts, great music, Trump would have been there, and YY would introduce him. Rechnitz would give the Divrei Bracha on Trump.

Of course Schottenstein could still say the kaddish

    #1818184

Where was Rechnitz? I am not his personal secretary nor do I know him personally but did you even think he was home in California for whatever personal reason he had?

“monotonous, repetitious program.” I was at both the siyum in 2005 and 2012 and did not find the program monotonous and repetitious. The 2019 siyum followed the same pattern as previous ones.

And I was thinking that this crowd over here supposedly of the “Yeshiva” type (as is Yeshiva World), would appreciate Gedolim. Good Heavens – this was a Siyum Hashas for some people (for those uneducated – that’s the completion of the Babylonian Talmud “daily reading”), they’re here to celebrate that long milestone with some meaning, feeling, inspiration. They’re not here for some concert with those other “gedolim”, who’ve nebach become the leaders of today’s lost sheep. They were here to bestow nachas to HaShem, to be encouraged to plow on. To give encouragement…

True, some singing is in store… a Chasuna needs music and dancing (and what a chasuna it was), but let’t not forget the Ikkur. Our heros are our Torah Gedolim, not those musical artists. We (should, of course) strive to emulate the ways of our Torah greats, it is to them alone who we look up to.

    @Little Froggie
Refreshing. There are still some people that haven’t gotten their basic hashkafah (As the very word implies, views) so tainted as to realize what the purpose of the whole thing was
I shudder to think, in just a few years we will have our “Rabamim/Speakers” and then some “Old men” who we can ask halachic and torah questions to, sad.
The gemara brachos states on the words “Sof Davar Hakol Nishma Es Haelokim Y’ra” that “Kol Mi Sheyesh Bo Yiraas Shamayim Dvarov Nishmaim” how far our for has come from that madreiga, we now only listen to speakers that have taken “Public speaking courses” and have mastered the art of sounding captivating and capturing your attention, it used to be about content, when previous gedolim would speak you could hear a pin drop that’s how closely everyone was listening to their every word…We don’t go to the siyum hashas for entertainment, it’s a celebration of 7 years of consistent daily Torah learning, I want to hear from someone that personifies this trait not an entertainer that can say “Current, interesting stories and jokes”
    How sad.

Rechnitz is the biggest tomech Torah the world has ever seen. In every respect. The bottom line is, Rechnitz is always very interesting and is a big draw. And To philosphys comment- Rechnitz isA huge Talmid chocham in his own right.

I am quite amused at both the substance and tone of the posts above complaining the siyum was” depressing, too much like a levayah, a bunch of geriatric guys in black suits crying gevalt,” etc.
    Huhhh???
This was a siyum hashas, not a Schweky concert with special guest stars, Moishe, Yankel and Mendel and the Monotones!!
Perhaps the issue is whether the entire idea of these+ years of daily, mega-siyums in huge venues needs to be reconsidered. I’m not ordinarily a big fan of Agudah for a number of reasons but given the fundamental purpose of a siyum (aka the celebration of 7+ years of limud torah l’shma) I think their efforts to organize and conduct a 100,000 person event was incredible and should be recognized as such.

PPP, I could not agree with you more. So concerning how the attention span of our people has become 0 and an event addressed by gedolei torah and where an azkara for the kedoshim is made, is called a “levaya”. why? because there weren’t entertainers. In the siyumim 22 and 29 years ago, you didn’t have any singing and dancing and no Pesach Krohn presenting gemoras. yet the attendees sat and listened to the gedolei torah attentively and respectfully.

The music was okay but could have featured some newer song, as had been done at previous Siyumim. Also unlike some of the previous Siyum HaShas the speeches didn’t really hit home.

Personally, I don’t care to hear Rechnitz speak. I want to hear gedolim speak about the gadlos of Torah. I enjoyed the R. Lish and R. Farhi presentations about people who have mesiras nefesh for Torah, as well as R. Paysach Krohn. But I went to hear gedolim . Not wealthy baalei tzedokah.

Why should Rechnitz have spoken? Moshe Reichman z’l used to come to the Siyum HaShas too but there was never a hava amina that he would speak.

The Siyum Hashas is made to celebrate learning Torah and to encourage people to do so. The program and speakers are clearly designed with that in mind.

Rechnitz for all the many wonderful things he does is not the first name that comes to mind when looking for people to encourage others to be Kovaeh Itim. Secondly, there would be a tremendous in danger in having him speak. It would give all the haters an excuse to say that the Siyum HaShas is all about money and rich Baal HaBatim. Of course the organizers were uninterested.

Most big Rabbonim don’t learn Daf Yomi, they are learning along with their yeshiva, and whatever is being done that zman.
I would much prefer to hear from some of the maggidei shiur who are baalei batim, who are much more likely to inspire others to learn. When a Rosh Yeshiva gets up and speaks about it, I’m not inspired. When someone who gets up at 5:00 am every day to attend a 5:30 shiur, before davening an early Shacharis, is the one speaking, I find it much more inspirational. I can relate to someone like that much more, as I’m in a similar situation.

    #1819343

smerel: Possible reason, he was the first speaker in 2012.

    #1819342

I’m big. Pretty big. (OK, not pretty, but big) And I try to learn Daf Yomi. Does that mean I’m not a Rabbonim?

Why would a rav or kollel yungerleit who is learning full time interrupt their learning to separately learn a blat gemorah separate from the masechta that they are currently focused on?

GH: To quote Rabbi Yaakov Bender, after viewing a video at the 2012 Siyum of a plumber who finished shas 4 times, it was time for me to finish it once.

The Aguda made a conscious decision to permanently ban the
Showcasing of gvirim at it’s Siyum Hashas.
Placing them on a Pedestal that stresses Torah is antithesis to
And the contrary of the entire event.
There was no Chairman whatsoever at this venue for that reason.
This is the official Aguda policy as decided by the Moetzes.
