The achievement tests given to second and fifth graders in Israel’s public schools are being canceled for the time being. Education Minister Shai Piron feels the exams are detrimental to teacher motivation; are a nightmare for weaker students and are the source of controversy between principals.
The tests are given once every four years towards determining the level of students in mathematics, English, and Science. Ministry officials explain the exam is intended for internal use, to permit them to evaluate the schools and students. However, in recent years the results have been publicized and for many schools, this was counterproductive and resulted in diminished motivation among teachers and students alike.
Ministry Director-General Dalit Stauber explains this particular exam has lost its effectiveness since the results have been published. She stresses the ministry still understands the value of evaluating both the teacher and student, and this will be done but this year, the exam will not be used to make this determination.
