NYC Lawmaker: I’ll Stick With ‘Yes’ On NYPD Oversight

nypdrgA lawmaker who’s been seen as a potentially crucial swing vote says he’s not changing his mind about creating new oversight for the New York Police Department.

City Councilman Erik Dilan says he’ll vote to override Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s vetoes of the legislation. Dilan plans to elaborate at a news conference Thursday.

The override vote is expected Aug. 22.

The legislation would establish an outside watchdog for police and make it easier to bring discriminatory policing suits.

The lawsuit part passed with exactly the 34 votes needed to override a veto. Dilan voted for it.

Bloomberg’s administration is pressing his case with lawmakers, hoping one or more will switch sides.

Dilan had been something of a question mark, as he once said new facts might change his mind.
