IDF Budget Cuts Hit Below the Belt

idfThe espresso machines that use coffee capsules have become somewhat of a status symbol for officers who have one in their office. These machines have earned a prominent spot in many an officers’ office, but it appears they will soon be a thing of the past as the IDF is on a belt-tightening path.

Officials of the IDF’s Logistics Branch realized that while a cup of local instant coffee costs 30 agorot, and an import instant brand 42-62 agorot, the capsules are way over budget considering the IDF’s new fiscal reality. Officials adds that a cup of local Turkish brand costs 80 agorot, but that is still a far cry from the capsules, which cost 1.7 NIS – 2.4 NIS per cup.

The machines are being removed from all offices with the exception of IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz. Officials add that Gantz personally only drinks Turkish coffee so on the personal level the decision does not affect him. However, the decision-makers point out the IDF commander hosts many dignitaries from around the world and therefore, it is only fitting that his staff has the coffee option available.

The new directive states that any officer who wishes to purchase a machine on his/her own and pay for the coffee capsules may do so. The directive is not against having the capsules, just paying for them.
