During the process of accepting a new prisoner in the Megiddo Prison, Israel Prison Authority (IPA) officials had the prisoner pass through a metal detector as part of the intake process. A foreign object was detected in his abdomen, partly because he elicited the attention of guards by the fact the new prisoner was too anxious to complete the intake process.
After it was established that the item setting off the metal detectors was inside his body, it was decided to send him to a hospital with an IPA escort. An x-ray performed in the hospital confirmed their suspicions, as he had a smartphone in his body. He was admitted and performing a medical process succeeded in removing not one phone from his abdomen, but two; along with three SIM cards.
Doctors explained that if not removed as they did, the devices could have led to serious complications or even death.
The prisoner in question belongs to the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) organization and was released from Gilboa Prison in June 2019. This last arrest is his third.
Of late, IPA officials explain there has been an increase in attempts to smuggle phones into the prison by inmates and visitors for the purpose of using them to arrange terrorist attacks.

No one can swallow a cell phone. They were clearly put in through surgical means. The only way they could have been extracted is through cutting the abdomen open. In other words, in prison that guy would have been sacrificed.
That is not a smartphone. @MDG you are clearly unfamiliar with Israeli dumbphones. They can be as small as 1.5 inches by three inches, which is swallowable

And it says abdomen, not stomach.
Clearly it was surgically implanted.
The article SAYS smartphone, but, as Mrs. D so aptly remarked, the quality of the English in this article is terrible. The PHOTOS clearly show a phone with a numerical keypad, which, although may technically qualify as a smartphone if it has internet capability, is of a swallowable size, as are many Israeli dumbphones.
The stomach is located in the abdominal area. The word בטן means either, at least according to Google translate (which translates בטן as stomach, but translates abdomen as בטן).
I should note that the reason I commented on the meaning of בטן is because this article has either been translated from Hebrew or written by a Hebrew-speaking person for whom English is not his/her first language.

Good explanation. I read quickly and took the words at face value.
If that picture is correct, the phones are nearly 2 inches by 5 inches. I still don’t see how they could be swallowed.
I heard of a case of drug smugglers who implanted wrapped-up drugs in a carrier’s body. That’s what I was thinking about.
I just realized that it may be 2 cm by 5 cm, roughly 1 inch by 2.5 inches.
That’s swallow-able.
