Orthodox Jewish Assemblyman Becomes Passaic NJ’s Acting Mayor

schaer.jpgPassaic City Council President/Acting Mayor Gary S. Schaer released a statement Friday in the aftermath of Mayor Samuel Rivera’s departure from office, after pleading guilty to extortion in federal court (reported HERE on YWN).

“This is a difficult time for Passaic,” said Schaer. “I am committed, along with my city council colleagues, to restoring confidence to the residents of Passaic and assuring them that the services provided by our municipal government will continue as normal.

“The hard-working residents of Passaic deserve a municipal government that is honest and trustworthy,” he added. “…While I did not seek this position, my role as Council President statutorily requires this service.”

Schaer, who said he would receive no additional compensation or benefits as acting mayor, announced that he will be sworn-in during a “private ceremony” performed by the city clerk. He has scheduled a meeting of the city’s department directors for Monday morning.

“Together, we will move forward and continue to improve the quality of life for everyone who lives in our great city,” Schaer said.

  1. According to the NJ State law, no official is allowed to have more then one government job. Although Mr.Schaer is jewish, we have seen better officials then the yiddish ones.

  2. Current law prohibits Council members, while serving on the Council and for two years thereafter, from
    holding any other state or local public office. The legislation modifies these restrictions in the following
    manner:
    · while serving on the Council, a member would be prohibited from holding any other State or local
    public office;
    · while serving on the Council and for two years thereafter, a member would be prohibited from
    holding elective State or local public office;
    · for a period of two years after serving on the Council, a member would be prohibited from being
    employed with a county, municipality, or school district which filed a complaint with the Council
    while the member served on the Council;
    · for a period of two years after serving on the Council, a member would be prohibited from
    employment with a State agency that promulgated a rule or regulation which was the subject of a
    complaint during the member’s service on the Council; and
    · members would be allowed to serve on a study commission or similar advisory body for which no
    compensation is paid, other than reimbursement of expenses.

  3. Commish, did you bother reading the part of the legislation that says that existing officeolders are grandfathered?
